2006 Outstanding Alumni
Dr. H.A. "Bud" Smith, '66
Dr. Bud Smith has had multiple leadership roles in a wide
variety of organizations and public interest entities. He joined
the Brenham Veterinary Hospital in 1966 and practiced there until
1995. Smith was named the 1994 TVMA Equine Practitioner of the Year
and remains an active member of the AVMA, TVMA and AAEP. Smith has
conducted educational programs for the Greater Houston Large Animal
Practitioners Association, BVVMA, AAEP and TAMU student
organizations. He is also a highly active member of his community:
he gives talks to local 4-H and FFA groups; is a member of the
Brenham Rotary Club; is on the board of directors for the Boys and
Girls Club of Washington County; and was the director of the
Washington County Chamber of Commerce - just to name a few
examples.
For nearly four decades, he has been incredibly and consistently
supportive of the college's Department of Large Animal Clinical
Sciences, and he was instrumental in formulating the strategic plan
for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. He serves on the
college's Development Council and on the committee for the Rural
Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund and also provides student
externships at his practice. Smith has been described as an
excellent practitioner by his peers and is always eager to share
his knowledge and expertise with students and fellow
veterinarians.
Smith and his wife, Judy, live in Brenham and have been married
for 45 years. He is an avid quail hunter and golfer, and he and his
wife love to travel. They have two sons, Marc, Class of '86 and
vice president of Waterford Homes in Venice, Florida, and Scott,
Class of '87 and an orthopedic surgeon in Austin, Texas. The Smiths
also have six grandchildren who keep them very busy and also have
aspirations of attending Texas A&M.
