Dr. Jock Collins, '57

Dr. Jock Collins practiced veterinary medicine for almost 40 years after a short career as a federal regulatory veterinarian both in Animal Inspection and Quarantine and as a USDA Meat Inspector. Collins, who was named the 1988 TVMA Outstanding Companion Animal Practitioner of the Year and is a member of numerous professional and veterinary medical organizations, has since retired from clinical practice and is now devoted full-time to his love of science, research and development, especially in chemistry and microbiology.

His concern for the environment and its cleanup, as well as the impending world energy shortage, has led to numerous patents for materials and energy savings devices and delivery systems. He currently has a patent pending on what he refers to as "WellGels," which are products that greatly improve new well drilling efficiency by significantly improving cuttings removal in the drilling process. Along with his current interests in research, Collins has developed and patented a revolutionary surgical stapler that eases the placement of surgical staples, thereby speeding the healing process and virtually eliminating scar formation.

Collins has established an Endowed Scholarship at the college and is a Mark Francis Fellow. He is an expert certified SCUBA diver, sailor, hunter, fisherman and an award-winning photographer. He and his wife, Vicki, live in Houston and have been married for 40 years and have two daughters, Laura and Lorraine.
