2008 Outstanding Alumni
Dr. Roland Lenarduzzi, '70
Dr. Roland Lenarduzzi,'70, graduated valedictorian from the
College of Veterinary Medicine. After commencement, he continued
his education with an Ambulatory Internship at the University of
California-Davis from 1970 to 1971. In 1973, he designed and built
his own clinic in Manvel, Texas. He continues to practice, with two
associate veterinarians, Drs. Gina Varns, '85, and John Scott, '69,
at the Manvel Animal Clinic, caring for both large and small
animals.
In 1980, Dr. Lenarduzzi helped found an animal emergency clinic
for companion animals in the Alvin-Friendswood-Clear Lake area. The
clinic became part of the Animal Emergency Clinic-Southeast in
Houston, one of the first animal emergency clinics in the United
States. He was actively involved in the operation and management of
these clinics, serving on their board of directors and as
president. These clinics, now operated by Veterinary Companies of
America, Inc., continue to provide emergency services to a large
area of southeast Houston extending to Galveston and surrounding
areas.
During his career, Dr. Lenarduzzi has published three articles
in Veterinary Medicine. His first article entitled
"Management of Eyelid Problems in Chinese Shar Pei Puppies," was
published in April 1983, and describes a treatment technique he
devised. His second article, "Feline Hyperthyroidism: Curing the
Condition, Understanding the Cause," describing the diagnosis and
surgical treatment of a case of feline hyperthyroidism, was
published in March 1986. His third article, "Diagnosing Pulmonary
Histoplasmosis despite Nonspecific Clinical Signs," describing the
diagnosis of pulmonary histoplasmosis by aspiration cytology, was
published in May 1986. These three articles describe clinical
problems Dr. Lenarduzzi encountered in practice, the knowledge of
which he felt would benefit other veterinarians.
Dr. Lenarduzzi is active in the Texas Veterinary Medical
Association (TVMA). He was elected District Director of the Gulf
Coast District in 1993, Chairman of the TVMA Board of Directors in
1997, and TVMA President in 2005. In 2006 and 2007, he chaired the
TVMA Task Force on Workforce Issues in Mixed Practice-Large Animal
Practice-Rural Practice. Throughout his leadership tenure with
TVMA, Dr. Lenarduzzi has been devoted to strengthening the
relationship between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the
veterinary profession, with a special interest in veterinary
student programs.
He currently serves on the Selections Committee for the Texas
A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences as
an ex-officio member representing TVMA and the Texas veterinary
profession. He is also the chairman of the TVMA-Texas A&M
University-College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences
Liaison Committee.
Dr. Lenarduzzi is a member of Calvary Chapel in Friendswood,
Texas and has served his community through church work for the past
30 years. He enjoys golf and other outdoor activities, as well as
traveling, reading, and photography. He and his wife of 38 years,
Linda, live in Brazoria County near Alvin, and have two children,
Lori, 32, and Matthew, 23.
