Study Summary: EPIC Study Summary
  • This study will evaluate if pimobendan (VetmedinĀ®) can prolong the asymptomatic stage of chronic leaky mitral valve disease (i.e. delay the onset of heart failure/pulmonary edema).
  • It is a placebo controlled study that is fully funded (no cost to the owner).
  • The study requires screening to determine if all entry criteria are met and then follow-up appointments (approximately every 4 months) at TAMU.
Eligibility for EPIC free screening including a physical exam and echocardiogram at TAMU
  • Relatively healthy dogs greater or equal to 6 year of age
  • Weight between 9 and 33.1 lbs (must weigh at least 9 lbs)
  • Heart murmur from leaky mitral valve greater than or equal to 3/6
  • Willing to come to Texas A & M approximately every 4 months for 4-5 years
  • Fulfill the rest of the screening criteria which can be determined during a free screening visit to Texas A & M.
  • Not taking enalapril, benazepril, furosemide, pimobendan or a beta-blocker such as atenolol or carvedilol
  • Client willing to consider taking part in a placebo controlled clinical study
