- Disaster Preparedness PSA
April 4, 2012
- In the last two weeks, we have had the opportunity to recognize
many people from our college for the tremendous impact they have
made on education and on the veterinary profession. Two faculty
members from the Veterinary Integrative Biosciences were recognized
with Association of Former Students University Level Distinguished
Achievement Awards. Dr. Barbara Gastel received the only award
given campus-wide in the category of Extension, Outreach,
Continuing Education, and Professional Development. Dr. Jane Welsh
was one of two awarded across the campus for Graduate Student
Mentoring. We also are pleased to announce that Edward Massingill,
of Custodial Services, was honored for his great efforts and
outstanding job in large animal surgery. What a tremendous
accomplishment for these members of our CVM family.
- In addition to the two university level awards, we were also
able to honor other faculty and students when we kicked off
Homecoming Weekend with the Honors Convocation. In all, 82 students
and CVM faculty were recognized for their achievements. That was
followed up with the Outstanding Alumni Dinner. This year, we
honored Dr. John R. Herbold '69, Dr. JoGayle Howard '80 (awarded
posthumously), Dr. J. Michael McFarland '85, Dr. Harold D. Putnam
'60, Dr. Ronald O. Stried '71, and Dr. Michael A. Walker '72. The
next day at the Gentle Doctor Scholarship Luncheon, faculty from
each department that won awards in the past year were
recognized.
- After an internal search, Dr. Allen Roussel has accepted the
position as department head for Large Animal Clinical Sciences. Dr.
Roussel has been at Texas A&M since joining the faculty as an
assistant professor in 1986. Roussel is a gifted leader ready and
able to work with VLCS faculty and staff to build upon the progress
made under the leadership of Dr. Bill Moyer and to move the
department forward to meet the challenges of the changing
environment of both veterinary medical education and the veterinary
profession.
- Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Bhanu Chowdhary and
his team - Dr. Ashley Seabury, Robin Benbow, and David Kessler as
they recently completed an external review of the Biomedical
Sciences graduate program. While the official report will not be
available until later in April, initial discussions with reviewers
have been very positive and demonstrate that we have a program of
which we can all be proud. We will, of course, share the final
report once it has been received.
- As an important reminder, the time has come for the official
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Accreditation
site visit at Texas A&M. The reviewing team will be here April
2-5, and team members will be visiting many locations around
campus. To prepare for the visit, it is imperative that we are all
familiar with the Texas A&M Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
Information about the QEP can be found at the following link:
http://provost.tamu.edu/initiatives/quality-enhancement-plan,
and a brief presentation can also be found on the kiosks in the
main lobby and the lobbies in both the Small and Large Animal
Hospitals. If you are unable to view the presentation on the
kiosks, it is also available on our website at the following link:
/qep. Be sure to take a few moments to review
the presentation to be prepared for the accreditation visit. Please
be aware that members of the reviewing team may stop individuals in
the hallway and ask about the QEP, so we need to stay informed. If
you haven't already, please review the presentation on the kiosks
or visit the Provost's QEP website listed above.
- Things continue to be very busy around the CVM, and if you
haven't already done so, be sure to mark your calendar for the
19th Annual Open House. This completely student-run
event is scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, April
14th. There will be lots of new things to see this year,
as well as old favorites such as Teddy Bear Surgery. I look forward
to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
Eleanor M. Green, DVM, DACVIM, DABVP
