- The Board of Regents of the Texas A&M University System has
approved differential tuition for the DVM program, as well as for
programs in three other colleges on the College Station campus.
This increase in tuition for the DVM program will take effect in
the Fall of 2012. The college and students were well represented at
the Board meeting by both current and incoming DVM students. They
were articulate and professional and gave very influential
presentations. Each and every student who attended open forums or
provided written opinions, regardless of their position, was
important in the process. As we go forward with discussions
regarding the use of differential tuition funds, we will ensure
that we maintain strong and active student representation on the
differential tuition task force. In determining the actual increase
amount, our goal was for our tuition + fees to remain below the
national average, such that the excellent education of our students
at Texas A&M continues to be a bargain, and that our student
debt at graduation remains below the national average. The funds
created by this increase will directly benefit our students by
preserving the high quality education that Texans expect and
deserve. Discussions regarding the use of these funds will include,
but not be limited to, the maintenance of high impact hands-on
learning experiences, the recruitment and retention of our
excellent faculty, and assurance of the highest quality,
state-of-the-art hospital and diagnostic equipment for the benefit
of our students.
- According to Dr. Loftin's Campus News & Notes email from
May 25th, the Texas House and Senate conference committee members
on the appropriations bill have made their recommendations
regarding higher education and are working to vote the printed bill
out of committee later this week. The full House and Senate planned
to vote on the final bill this past weekend. Even though we do not
have specific appropriations numbers regarding Texas A&M, we
remain cautiously optimistic -- based on the across-the-board
recommendations -- that we have adequately planned for the upcoming
budget reductions we are likely to face. We will keep you informed
of any developments regarding this critical piece of funding.
- We are fortunate to have received funding from the Patterson
Foundation to support graduate education and/or advanced training
here at the CVM. The newly funded Patterson Minority Fellowship has
been created to support a veterinarian pursuing either a PhD or a
three-year residency. Applications were invited from veterinarians
belonging to underrepresented minority groups, and in this
inaugural year of the program, we had eight outstanding applicants.
The applications for this award were reviewed by a faculty panel of
PhDs and DVMs. I'm pleased to announce that the first Patterson
Minority Fellowship has been awarded to Dr. Franklin R. Lopez, DVM.
Dr. Lopez completed his DVM at the National University Pedro
Henriquez Ureña in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and is
currently completing a residency in Comparative Medicine at the
University of Missouri, Columbia. Dr. Lopez will be using the
stipend and tuition support from the fellowship to pursue a
residency in anatomic pathology under the mentorship of Dr. Brian
Porter in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, beginning in
Fall 2011.
- In the Fall of 2010, all colleges and units on campus submitted
baseline assessment data on climate and diversity in support of the
University Diversity Plan. We recently received notification that
the CVM ranked in the top half of these units and that we were
awarded $110,000 in one-time funds for our progress in diversity.
Additionally, our DVM students recently completed a Climate Survey
sponsored by the AAVMC with a 77% response rate. A competition was
held between the four DVM classes over three weeks prior to finals,
with the class having the highest participation rate in the Climate
Survey winning a food-related prize. The winning class was the
Class of 2014. We look forward to seeing the results of this
survey. We continue to do a great job of recruiting faculty, staff,
and students that help us create a more welcoming and diverse
environment here at the CVM - an accomplishment we can all be proud
of.
