- The BIMS graduate program review has been completed. Thanks to
Dr. Bhanu Chowdhary for overseeing this review, all who helped him
prepare the document, and all who contributed to the review team
meetings. A final report is expected soon.
- The planning process for the new Veterinary Education Building
and Small Animal Hospital Expansion is moving full speed ahead.
Numerous architecture firms interested in bidding to design the new
building have visited our college and received tours. The new
building will be located approximately where the current aviary for
the Schubot Center for Exotic Bird Health is housed. Relocating the
Schubot Center will be the first step in our construction phase.
Plans have been submitted to the university's Council on the Built
Environment to relocate the aviary adjacent to the Winnie Carter
Wildlife Center. The education building and boulevard entry will
impinge on the Equine Reproduction Barn and Building 1147
(Terracon), respectively. We will continue to work closely with the
faculty and staff affected by this relocation to identify
alternative facilities as the process moves forward.
- Prior to Spring Break, I attended a full-day retreat hosted by
the Provost. Discussions included future budget scenarios for the
university, as well as good news from the previous year. The deans
were invited to present highlights and accomplishments from their
college from last year. It is always a pleasure to share with
others what you are accomplishing in CVM.
- Texas A&M was well-represented at the 2012 AAVMC Annual
Conference. Dan Posey was immersed in an educational session on
food supply veterinary medicine. Kenita Rogers met with other
associate deans on relevant topics. Dr. Bhanu Chowdhary met with
other associate deans and participated in research meetings at NIH.
I spent one day on the Hill visiting with our Texas legislators.
Some of the pertinent congressional funding issues include NIH
funding, formula funds for animal health & disease research,
agricultural and food research initiative, the veterinary loan
repayment program, regional centers of excellence in food supply
veterinary medicine, and national animal health laboratory network.
The highlight of the AAVMC meeting was watching Anton Hoffman
receive the National Pfizer Teaching Award and hearing him present
his philosophy of teaching.
- In 2011, the American Association of Veterinary Medical
Colleges (AAVMC) created a planning group called the North American
Veterinary Medical Education Consortium (NAVMEC), and tasked the
group with creating a strategic plan for the future of veterinary
medical education. I was honored to serve on the Board of Directors
with two other deans (Dr. Bennie Osburn from UC Davis and Dr.
Willie Reed from Purdue), three members of the Council on
Education, and three members of licensing boards. Three national
meetings were held with the largest group and broadest
representation ever gathered to discuss veterinary education. The
recently released Roadmap for Veterinary Medical Education in the
21st Century: Responsive, Collaborative, Flexible
represents the results of this effort. The final version of this

Many member institutions have already begun to incorporate
recommendations in the document in their own strategic planning
process. Earlier this week, the AAVMC released a second document
summarizing information that highlights the activities that the
AAVMC and member colleges are undertaking that complement the
recommendations in the NAVMEC report. Examples can be seen at the

- On April 2-5, 2012, the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS) site team will visit Texas A&M University.
Provost Karan Watson informs us that it is very important for
faculty, staff, and students to be knowledgeable of SACS
accreditation. As part of this process, a document that reaffirms
our commitment to a lifetime of learning has been created. The
Aggies Commit document (which may be accessed at
http://provost.tamu.edu/initiatives/quality-enhancement-plan/qep/AggiesCommit82411.pdf)
outlines the approach to identifying programs that enhance the
learning environment and measuring the success of these programs
over time. Some of the areas of focus include undergraduate
learning and research, global learning and diversity, learning
communities, internships and capstone projects, and writing
intensive courses.
- The Dean of Faculties has created a new committee named the
Academic Civil Rights Investigation Committee (ACRIC) that is
tasked with investigating violations of civil rights in our
academic community. Civil Rights violations and the ACRIC are
governed by University Rule 08.01.01.M1 (found at http://rules-saps.tamu.edu/PDFs/08.01.01.M1.pdf),
which was approved on Feb. 29 of this year. It also covers
University SAP 08.01.01.M1.02 (found at http://rules-saps.tamu.edu/PDFs/08.01.01.M1.02.pdf),
which was enacted on Jan. 20. Each college was asked to submit two
names to serve on this committee, and we have selected Dr. Lynn
Ruoff, clinical associate professor in the Department of Veterinary
Integrative Biosciences, and Dr. William Moyer, professor in the
Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, as representatives
from our college. One of the highest core values of Texas A&M
University is that of selfless service, and I appreciate Drs. Ruoff
and Moyer serving.
- This is a big week at the College. This Friday starts with a
Bridges Academy presentation by Jim Hermann. Friday afternoon
includes Honors Convocation at 1 pm and White Coat Ceremony at 3:30
pm. The Outstanding Alumni Dinner is Friday night at 6 pm at
Miramont.
- Saturday starts off with CVM Parent's Weekend, followed by the
annual Gentle Doctor Scholarship Luncheon. Please make plans to
join us at the Gentle Doctor Luncheon for fun, food, and fellowship
as we recognize those who have contributed to scholarships
benefitting our students, as well as those students who have
received scholarship support for their veterinary medical
education. The event will be held at The Zone at Kyle Field on
March 24. Lunch will be served buffet style beginning at noon with
a brief program at 1 pm. Reservations can be made online at /homecoming/gentle-doctor-luncheon

- The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is winding down and the
members of the HLSR Board of Directors have always been strong
supporters of our college. Our presence at HLSR is extensive.
Friday before Spring Break was Aggie Night at the rodeo. Reveille
VIII was a VIP guest at the CVM booth, and posed for photos with
visitors. Thank you to Beth Johnson and the Continuing Education
team for coordinating our exhibit this year, and for all of the
faculty, staff, and students who took their time to participate by
staffing the booth. Each of you does an outstanding job of putting
a face on our college for all those who visit the HLSR. Thank
