- Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Education
Building - The number 1 building priority on campus right
now is our proposal for a new Education Building. Texas A&M
University presented this idea to the State Legislature this
session as the only tuition revenue bond (TRB) for our campus. If
approved by the Texas Legislature, it would mean $100 M for our new
building and another $15 M for our Small Animal Hospital Expansion.
While this year is an uncharacteristically tough economic climate
for Texas and the nation, we have wide-spread understanding of our
need for this building to ensure our continued good standing and
accreditation with the AAVMC Council on Education.
- Differential Tuition - The College of
Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences has been asked by the
TAMU Tuition
Policy Advisory Council to submit a proposal for differential
tuition for our DVM program. We are in the process of engaging
current DVM students in discussions and soliciting their online feedback. The final DVM
differential tuition proposal will be submitted by President Loftin
to the Board of Regents at their May 2011 meeting.
- CVM/TVMA Collaboration - Talks have begun
between the CVM Office of Continuing Education, a college-level
Continuing Education Task Force, and the Texas Veterinary Medical
Association to explore the potential for co-branding many of our
continuing education programs. This effort will provide both
organizations to strengthen existing continuing education offerings
in the State of Texas which ultimately will benefit veterinarians
in our state and beyond.
- World Veterinary Year is off to a tremendous
start. We began with our first ever Veterinary Legislative Day on
Feb. 1 in Austin, where we were able to share our story with
legislators and visitors from around the state. This was a
successful collaboration between our college and TVMA. Then we
celebrated World Veterinary Year with a gala on Feb. 25 at the
Hagler Center on main campus. Exhibits included rare pieces of the
Wood Veterinary Medical Collection and antique veterinary
equipment. We also kicked off a 3-part lecture series with a
presentation by Trenton Boyd on March 4 that covered the history of
veterinary medicine through his unique post card collection. Please
mark your calendars for the next two parts of this special lecture
series. On April 27, we will look at the present global impact of
the veterinary profession, and the on October 12, we will look at
the future of veterinary medicine. More information with details
will be sent out in the future.
- And while you are looking at your calendars, be sure to block
the weekend of April 2. This is our CVM Homecoming Weekend
and Parents' Day. On Saturday, we will celebrate at The
Zone Club adjacent to Kyle Field with the Gentle Doctor Scholarship
Luncheon. Students, their parents, faculty, and staff are
encouraged to attend. Some classes will be hosting reunions during
the luncheon, and many of our scholarship donors will be attending.
It's a great time to meet the person who has provided a scholarship
and thank them for their contribution. For more information or to
purchase your tickets, visit the GDSL
website or contact Noell Vance at 979-845-9043. It's going to
be a great time, so be sure to join us!
Sincerely,
Eleanor M. Green, DVM, DACVIM, DABVP
