- Excitement is in the air with the recent news that we have been
approved for $120 million in Permanent University Funding (PUF) for
the construction of a new Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical
Sciences Education Building and Small Animal Hospital Expansion.
These important projects will be presented as part of the Capital
Plan to the Board of Regents at their February 2012 meeting for
final approval. While people make programs and the basis for great
teaching is great teachers, excellent facilities make our jobs more
enjoyable and expand our horizons and capabilities. This investment
in our college is a sign of confidence that we will make
significant returns on the investment. We will continue graduating
the highest quality veterinarians, prepared to meet the diverse
demands of our profession and to serve the needs of Texans and
society in general. As we move forward into the design phase of
this new addition to our CVM campus, we will ensure that our built
environment nurtures creativity and collaboration, and that it
incorporates the latest in educational technology in classrooms and
laboratories.
- I want to thank everyone involved in helping our college get to
this point - your administrative team - your associate deans,
department heads, and hospital director, the staff in the Dean's
Office, John Scroggs, Lauren Pluhar, Sam Wigington, and members of
the CVM Master Planning Task Force. I also ask that if you happen
to see Chancellor John Sharp, President R. Bowen Loftin, Provost
Karan Watson, or any members of the Board of Regents, please thank
them. The process of requesting PUF money for our new building was
competitive, and this decision represents recognition of the
important role that veterinary medicine plays not only within our
university community, but also to the State of Texas and beyond. I
thank every faculty member, staff member, and student who through
their daily works contribute to the value of our College.
- On November 11, 2011, College Hour will be devoted to
facilities. The CVM's new Director of Facilities, Sam Wigington,
and I will be presenting information on the CVM Master Plan as well
as our new Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Education
Building and Small Animal Hospital Expansion.
- On April 2-5, 2012, the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS) site team will visit Texas A&M University.
Provost Karan Watson informs us that it is important for faculty to
be knowledgeable of SACS accreditation. To supplement other
informational sessions, Dr. Pam Matthews, Vice Provost for Academic
Affairs, will prepare a white paper briefing the most pertinent
information for faculty, staff, and students.
- The Aggies Commit document outlines the approach to identifying
programs that enhance the learning environment and measuring the
success of these programs over time. Some of the areas of focus
include undergraduate learning and research, global learning and
diversity, learning communities, internships and capstone projects,
and writing intensive courses.
- As the date for the accreditation review visit nears, we will
continue to engage in conversations with university administration
and will be providing an updated FAQ in the near future for
faculty, staff, and students. Also, Department Heads will be
discussing SACS accreditation during upcoming faculty
meetings.
- I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Regents is
engaging in two-way dialogues on campus. Regents will meet with
Deans at regular Council of Deans Meetings. Regent Jim Schwertner
was the first to do so and I look forward to sharing some of his
comments with you. In an impressive presentation,
Regent Schwertner restated his commitment to and support of Texas
A&M University, and to listening to members of the
administration and the faculty about how to continue advancing the
mission of our university. He continues to find ways to strengthen
relationships between the Board of Regents and the Texas A&M
University community.
- The Dean of Faculties Office has officially released the
request for proposals from the colleges for programs that support
Activity 2 - Integration of Multidisciplinary Research and Creative
Activities into the Learning Experience, which is part of the
Distribution of Reallocation Funds for FY12. The present RFP gives
$1 million in recurring funds to support up to 10 proposals
annually. Minimum criteria include: engage at a minimum 100
undergraduate students (or 50 graduate students) per academic year,
involve at least two colleges or schools from Texas A&M-College
Station, integrate active research or creative activities in the
learning experience, must have an experiential component beyond the
classroom setting, define learning outcomes and describe methods to
assess and evaluate effectiveness, and include a plan for
sustainability beyond the funded period to ensure that the proposed
project can be institutionalized. Pre-proposals have been submitted
to the CVM administrative team and are currently under
evaluation. The deadline for submitting fully-developed
proposals is December 8, with an announcement of which proposals
were selected for funding planned for January 2012. The Dean of
Faculties Office has established websites with more information on
the reallocation plan - http://dof.tamu.edu/content/request-proposals
, and for this specific RFP http://dof.tamu.edu/node/824
