- The Fall semester is in full swing and our college is buzzing
with activity. This next week, we will have the opportunity to host
some very special guests at the CVM. On Monday, Oct. 8th, the
members of the Texas A&M Equine Initiative Development Council
will be meeting to continue working on strategies that will support
the development of the premier equine science program dedicated to
research, education, service, and outreach in the nation.
- Following the Equine Initiative Development Council meeting, I
invite everyone in the CVM Family to join the Council members as we
break ground on the new Equine Complex. The ceremony is scheduled
for 10 am on October 9th at the site of the complex which is
located on F&B Road just off of 2818. Members of the Board of
Regents, Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin, Athletic Director
Eric Hyman, and other distinguished guests from the equine industry
will be present for this special occasion. Phase 1 of the new
complex will house an education center, facilities for the Texas
A&M Equestrian team, a cross country course for Texas A&M
athletics, and potentially space for Parsons Mounted Cavalry.
- We will also take time this next week to show our appreciation
to members of the Executive Committee from the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo (HLSR). Not only do some of our veterinary medical
students serve in externships at the HLSR, but also this
organization gives financial support to our college in the form of
scholarships. In addition to sharing the latest news around the CVM
with our guests, students who have received HLSR scholarships will
have the opportunity to thank the committee members for their
support. Afterward, we will be taking our guests on a tour of the
college thanks to the help of our Vet Med Ambassadors.
- I am excited to announce the selection of SHW Group/Cannon
Design as the architectural team leading the design project
for the construction of a new Veterinary Medical Education Building
and Small Animal Hospital Expansion for the Texas A&M College
of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). This team
was selected from a large number of architectural firms expressing
interest in the project, after many months of visits with firms of
interest, and after hours of formal interviews. This group
captured our attention immediately. Not only did they emit a
quality of competence, creativity, and innovation, they seemed to
understand our vision and the importance of this project to our
future. They recognized the significance of this
once-in-a-lifetime construction project and their enthusiasm about
our project was palpable. We would not have arrived at this pivotal
point without the support of many. The leadership of our facilities
director, Sam Wigington, and his team, has been notable. We
are enormously grateful for the essential support of Chancellor
John Sharp, President R. Bowen Loftin, Texas A&M Facilities
Planning and Construction, and all of the others involved in this
process.
- The One Health Plus initiative continues to move forward as one
of the identified Grand Challenges by the university
administration. As part of our commitment to One Health Plus, we
have created a new position on our administrative team - Assistant
Dean of One Health & Strategic Initiatives. Dr. Michael
Chaddock, who most recently served as Deputy Executive Director of
the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, has been
selected to serve in this unique role, and will be arriving in
Aggieland very soon. He will be visiting College Station as he
prepares to settle here, so please join me in extending some Aggie
hospitality as we welcome Dr. Chaddock to our CVM family.
- It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news that one of
our CVM Development Council members has passed away on October 3rd.
Patsy Nichols, and her husband, Bruce, have been tremendous
supporters of our college. A Celebration of Patsy's life will be
held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas on
Saturday, Oct. 6th at 1 pm. A private burial in College
Station will follow. Patsy fought very hard against a massive viral
attack, but is now no longer suffering. Join me in offering comfort
and support for Patsy's family - Bruce, Travis, Katie, and the
grandchildren - as they face this difficult time.
- If you have not had the opportunity, please take time to stop
by and bid farewell to John Scroggs, who has served as Chief of
Staff for the CVM since January 2010. Today is his final day at the
CVM, as he is moving on to a new position with the University of
California, Berkeley. The strides we have made in creating a
welcoming climate through increased diversity initiatives are a
part of the legacy that he will leave behind. I know his decision
to move to the West Coast was not easy - John is an Aggie in every
sense of the word - but just as I hope he is a better person and
professional for his time here, I know that the CVM is a better
place for having had him as part of our family. We wish him all the
best in this new chapter in his journey.
Sincerely,
Eleanor M. Green, DVM, DACVIM, DABVP
