Small Animal Medicine and Surgery
The greatest needs here are for staffing and space. Residencies
are much needed in the areas of neurology, oncology, cardiology,
ophthalmology, medicine and surgery.
CVM feline specialists Dr. John R. August and Dr. Alice M. Wolf
are currently working to acquire funding for a Feline Medicine
Residency training program. The TAMU-VMTH is the only university
veterinary hospital to offer a full time Feline Internal Medicine
referral service, and this training program would be the only one
of its kind in the country. Residents completing this post-DVM
training will be qualified for certification by the American Board
of Veterinary Practitioners - Feline Practice Specialty, and the
American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Specialty of
Internal Medicine.
The most urgent spatial needs are for expansion of the clinical
research and diagnostic laboratories. The demands for the services
they provide have tripled in the last few years, clearly indicated
by increases in the number of samples received on a daily basis,
from all over the world. Indications are that the workload will
only increase.
