CVM Celebrates End of 2017 with Holiday Reception

CVM Holiday Party

Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) staff, faculty, and administrators came together to celebrate the past year during the annual CVM Holiday Party on Dec. 12.

During the event, Eleanor Green, the Carl B. King Dean of Veterinary Medicine, thanked faculty and staff for all that they do, through the notable conferences hosted in the college over the last year; the research successes and benchmarks reached by faculty; the signature programs designed and implemented by the faculty and staff; and the overall tone of inclusivity that everyone has worked to accomplish within the CVM.

“The main purpose of being here is to celebrate the holidays as a CVM family,” Green said. “But I have to say what a wonderful year it’s been, and that’s because of all of you. I’d match you all against anybody, anywhere in the country. I’m so proud of each one of you, so proud to be a part of the CVM family; what you do every single day is astounding. You are so important and are making an impact.”

Green also praised the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, its “fabulous students” and the wonderful new curriculum; the Biomedical Sciences program, which has exhibited continued growth and implemented a fruitful BIMS Advisory Board this year; and the graduate program, with its increased reach and high quality.

“When Provost (Carol) Fierke came here, and I told her all about who we are and what we’ve done and I got to graduate program, she was so impressed by what we’re doing with the graduate program. She said, ‘this is a campus model and we need to do that centrally for the whole campus.’ So, thanks to Bob Burghardt (associate dean for research and graduate studies), his staff, and all the faculty who contributed to that; it’s been amazing.”

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospitals also have had a stellar year, Green said.

“The faculty, staff, and students who work tirelessly every day in the hospital, what they do is incredible,” Green said. “Not only do they offer fabulous care, but they’ve saved my old dog three times, and the same with my horse. You hear about so many people who say the same thing; they’re great on both sides.”

During the event, Marty Holmes, Texas A&M Association of Former Students vice president for marketing and programs, presented AFS college-level teaching awards to Louise Abbott, a professor of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences (VIBS), and Stacy Eckman, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (VSCS).
