Dr. Shirley Tarawali, assistant director general at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi, Kenya, recently presented a seminar titled “Livestock and the Sustainable Development Goals” presented at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). At the talk, Tarawali discussed livestock as a renewable resource. Throughout the developing world, livestock are how hundreds of millions of people escape absolute poverty. Livestock in developing countries contribute up to 80 percent of agricultural GDP, and 600 million rural poor people rely on livestock for their livelihoods. However, Tarawali noted livestock are conspicuously absent from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Topics and the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development, which is the plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity for the world.

Tarawali brings 30 years of experience in research development in Africa and Asia and serves on a number of international scientific and editorial committees. Currently, her responsibilities at ILRI include strategy, planning, partnerships, communications and knowledge management. At ILRI, she builds on her extensive knowledge regarding livestock and agricultural practices in a global environment.

The CVM, Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, and Texas A&M One Health Initiative co-hosted Tarawali’s visit. Her presentation was well attended by undergraduate students, graduate students, professional students, and faculty from across the university. A recording of the presentation can be found here.
