Internal Medicine

The Internal Medicine Service works with patients with diseases affecting most of the major body systems, including:

• liver and gall bladder
• kidneys and urinary bladder
• gastrointestinal tract and pancreas
• lungs and upper airways
• endocrine glands - pancreas, thryoid, adrenals
• immune system and bone marrow
• infectious diseases

We work closely with your regular veterinarian, so that he or she is fully aware of the status of your pet and our findings and plans. A written report detailing the care provided here is sent promtly to your veterinarian.

The Internal Medicine Service offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as:

• Esophagoscopy, gastroscopy and duodenoscopy (exam of the stomach and upper bowel)
• Colonoscopy (exam of the large intestine)
• Cystoscopy (exam of the bladder) and ultrasound-guided laser ablation of transitional cell carcinoma
• Tracheoscopy and bronchoscopy (exam of the airways)
• Rhinoscopy (exam of the nasal passages)
• Laparoscopy (exam of the abdominal contents, esp. liver, kidneys, pancreas)
• Feeding tube placement (tubes may be placed in the esophagus, stomach, or jejunum)
• Bone marrow aspiration
• Interventional radiology (such as nasopharyngeal stent placement, urethral stent placement, occlusion of intra-hepatic shunts)

The doctors on the Internal Medicine Service work closely with the specialists on other services, such as the Soft Tissue Service and the Oncology Service.
