Emergency Services and Critical Care

Our Emergency Room is always open for patients with serious, life-threatening problems or minor emergencies in the event that your primary veterinarian is unable to see you or provide the necessary treatment.  A veterinarian and support staff are in the hospital 24 hours a day for receiving and monitoring of patients.

We are a fully functional service with the capabilities of the entire hospital for true emergencies such as surgical emergencies.  Our primary goal is to provide immediate initial evaluation, stabilization, treatment and diagnostics for acutely ill or injured pets.  Our veterinarians can then consult with a host of specialists in all fields to provide the best possible care to your pet.  See our Services and Facilities for more information.

Our ICU provides ongoing care and monitoring of critically ill or injured pets and those recovering from surgery.  This may include continuous ECG and pulse oximetry monitoring, fluid and transfusion therapy or oxygen and ventilatory support.  See our Services and Facilities for more information.

What to expect:

  • If your pet is experiencing a critical emergency, a senior veterinary student will immediately take him/her back to the ER for stabilization and initial assestment and diagnostics by a veterinarian.
  • If your pet is stable, a senior veterinary student will take a history and perform an initial assessment followed by assessment by a veterinarian.
  • A treatment plan will be created including needed diagnostics and an estimate will be generated.  Treatment may include staying in the hospital or may be done on an outpatient basis depending on the condition.  Transfers may also be made back to your primary veterinarian.
