Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule an
appointment?
Internal Medicine appointments are made on a referral basis,
meaning that an examination here has been advised by your
pet's regular veterinarian. Appointments can be scheduled
Monday-Friday from 8 am until 5 pm, at 979 845 2351.
New patients are generally seen in the mornings, on Monday
through Thursdays
What should I bring with me?
Please bring any radiographs your veterinarian has taken, as
these cannot be faxed to us. Although we usually receive a copy of
your pet's medical record by fax, it is often helpful to bring a
copy with you.
Please bring all medications your pet is currently taking.
Should I feed or medicate my
dog that morning?
Please give all medications as directed by your regular
veterinarian.
Do not feed your dog UNLESS your pet is a diabetic, in which
case, please feed and give insulin as usual.
Allow your pet access to water, unless specifically directed
otherwise.
What should I expect at my
appointment?
A veterinary student will go through your pet's medical history
and perform a physical examination. He or she will then discuss
your pet with one of the clinicians on the service, and they will
formulate a tentative plan. The student and clinician will then
discuss their plan with you, and make sure you understand and
approve before proceding with any tests or treatments.
How long will all this take?
Please allow
several hours for your appointment. Most new patients spend the day
with us. Depending on what is needed, some are hospitalized for
more intensive diagnostics and care.
What will this cost?
All costs will be explained to you before any tests or
treatments are performed and you will be provided with a written
estimate. If your pet's needs change, we will update you about
additional expenses if we expect to exceed the original
estimate.
Specialist care is generally more costly that routine care, but
we make every effort to keep costs low and use your resources in
the best way possible.
A deposit of 50% of the estimate will be collected before
patient's are admitted to the hospital. This can be paid by cash,
check or credit card.
What do I do if I
have an emergency with my pet?

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Emergency Service is
staffed by trained veterinarians, technicians and students 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year. We are ready to take care of your pet for
any reason, at any time.
It is helpful if you call us first so we know to expect you.
Please call (979)845-2351 and just let us know when you plan to
arrive at the hospital.
Please remember that patients are seen on the triage system. The
very ill will be given priority, so some less urgent cases may
experience a wait during our busy times.
Will students work
on my pet?
The mission of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is to
provide top-level medical services, whilst training the next
generation of veterinarians. Students are responsible for most
patient care duties, and learn to perform diagnostic and
therapeutic techniques. At all times, students are double checked
and closely supervised by house officers and faculty members.
As daily feeding, walking and grooming are performed by the
assigned student, most dogs become very attached to this
individual. In many instances, client communication is undertaken
by the student, and you can expect an update at least once a day if
your dog is hospitalized.
