The Texas A&M University Soft Tissue Surgery (STS) service treats a myriad of surgical diseases.  Staffed by senior surgery faculty, residents in surgical training, rotating interns and veterinary technicians, the Soft Tissue Surgery service strives to give veterinary patients state-of-the-art care working closely with many of the other departments at Texas A&M Teaching Hospital.  Surgeries performed on the STS service are varied, ranging from intestinal foreign bodies to tracheal surgery.  In conjunction with the Oncology service, the STS service performs skin, thoracic, and abdominal mass removals.  Perianal hernia repairs, brachycephalic airway surgery (soft palate resection, stenotic nares surgery) and thoracic surgery, such as lung lobectomies and closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), are commonly performed on the STS service.  Wound care (from dog bites to automobile injuries) is also a major component of soft tissue surgery.  We work closely with Internal Medicine for treatment of conditions like portosystemic shunts and adrenal disease.  In addition, Minimally Invasive Surgery is becoming an important part of soft tissue surgery, allowing us to perform many of our abdominal and thoracic surgeries through small incisions, just like in human surgery.

The Texas A&M Soft Tissue Surgery Service is staffed by five American College of Veterinary Surgeon (ACVS) Diplomates that provide gold standard care for dogs and cats referred to Texas A&M by veterinarians in Texas and surrounding states.  As a teaching hospital, the STS team is also comprised of surgical residents that undergo a rigorous three year program (after completing a rotating internship and 4 years of veterinary school).  In addition to teaching residents, the STS faculty provide mentorship and instruction to rotating interns and veterinary students, helping prepare them for a career in academia or private practice.  The STS service is always available for consultations for our referring veterinarians.
