This weekend was the annual Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners WetLab! As the president of our student chapter, all of my time has been devoted to planning this event since the school year began in August. This year we were fortunate enough to be able to host 247 veterinary students from 22 different colleges of veterinary medicine. We had a total of 21 different labs, and each student was able to participate in 4 labs of their choice. The day began for me when I arrived at the large animal clinic at 5:30 am. I met the rest of our 18 member committee and officer team to make the final preparations for the participants to arrive. By 7:00 student volunteers were arriving in great numbers. They checked in, picked up supplies, and made their way to their station to get set up. By 7:30 am participants were arriving! So, this is the New Year! 2011 is here, New Year's resolutions are momentarily in full-swing, and the student recreation center is soon to reach full capacity. The spring semester is always an exciting time at the College of Veterinary Medicine: 1st year students are desperately searching for the best odor neutralizers after numerous failed attempts at freshening up their large animal anatomy jumpsuits, 2nd year students are looking forward to saving bananas from hemorrhaging out as we fumble through our "Suturing for Dummies" textbook, 3rd year students are about to step into full-time clinical rotations, and 4th year students will soon be referred to as Doctors of Veterinary Medicine! Meanwhile, the College of Veterinary Medicine just finished up conducting interviews for the upcoming Class of 2015. What a beautiful day!  It is a balmy 42 degrees outside with a humidity somewhere around 80%, at least when it is not actually raining.  I haven't seen the sun all day, and I don't expect to anytime soon.  What a beautiful Sunday!  (I promise, I am not being facetious.)  I have my feet propped up, switching between the NFL playoffs and college basketball.  I just got back from watching a movie with my wife.  How could this day be any better!?  I could really get used to this, but today is the last day of Christmas break. These past few weeks have been awesome!  I was able to catch up on some of my non-school work that had been shoved aside.  I have filled out applications, returned emails, worked on my extra-curricular activities, etc.  Most importantly, I have focused on being a husband for a couple of weeks.  I got to shorten my honey-do list, fix up the apartment, and make dinner.&n... After a week's worth of thoroughly thorough finals, I can happily exclaim that it's Christmas break! This is always a much needed vacation with all vet students because it allows us time to refocus our minds and metabolize all the caffeine we consumed during finals week. This break's to-do list (because even though it's a break, there are always things to do!) consists of setting up externships for my fourth year, catching up on sleep, working at a mixed practice back home, and spending some overdue time with my family. Even though it's only one semester away, the fact that I'm preparing for fourth year stuns me. It seems like just yesterday I was one of the first years slaving away in the anatomy lab, and now I'm finding myself strategically planning when to take my externships and vacations.
