3rd Annual Legends Premier
Stallion Season Auction
The holiday season is known to be a time when you may be able to
find a bargain online. While some are busy searching for great
deals on electronics or clothing, others found their "steals" in
the form of breedings that were offered through the Texas A&M
University Legends Premier Stallion Season Auction. In addition to
a great buy, those who purchase breedings in the auction also help
to support stallion reproductive research at the College of
Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
The Legends auction is an online auction to which stallion
owners donate breedings, or seasons. These seasons are then
auctioned to mare owners, with the proceeds going to support equine
reproductive research at Texas A&M University. The first two
years of the auction generated more than $500,000, which has
supported research projects through Stallion Reproductive Studies
at Texas A&M.
"We are so appreciative of the support that the industry has
provided us," said Dr. Dickson Varner, a stallion reproductive
specialist at Texas A&M. "Proceeds from the Legends auction
have been applied diligently to research and education in stallion
reproductive studies at the College of Veterinary Medicine &
Biomedical Sciences. As an example, 23 percent of invited research
papers on stallion reproduction at the recent International
Symposium on Equine Reproduction originated from Texas A&M
University. This research would not have been possible
without the support of the equine industry."
The 3rd Annual Legends Premier Stallion Season
Auction began on December 1, 2010. It is comprised of three
sessions, the last of which closes on February 18, 2011. Breedings
to some of the most elite stallions from western performance,
Quarter Horse racing, rail disciplines and halter were donated to
the auction this year, with more than 200 total breedings available
to bidders.
"We are committed to improving reproductive management practices
within the horse industry," said Varner. "We sincerely thank the
stallion owners and agents, as well as the mare owners, for helping
us fulfill this mission by participating in the 3rd
Annual Legends Premier Stallion Season Auction."
