Scholarly Interests

Dr. Tammy Beckham serves a director of the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense (FAZD Center), a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. As director, Beckham leads Center efforts to perform research and develop products to defend the nation from high-consequence foreign animal, emerging, and zoonotic diseases. Founded in April 2004 as a Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Center of Excellence, the FAZD Center leverages the resources of multiple major universities, Minority Serving Institutions, and private industry partners. Dr. Beckham also serves as director of the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. She provides leadership for TVMDL’s four locations, comprising two full-service laboratories, in College Station and Amarillo, and two poultry laboratories, in Center and Gonzales. Dr. Beckham leads one of the highest volume animal diagnostic labs in the country, as TVMDL receives approximately 160,000 submissions and runs approximately 800,000 tests per year.
