Dr. Larry J. Suva Joins the CVM as VTPP Department Head

Please welcome Dr. Larry J. Suva, department head in Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology. He comes from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he was professor and director for the Center for Orthopaedic Research and the inaugural recipient of the Carl L. Nelson Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Creativity.

Advance Scholars: Esteve-Gassent and Arenas-Gamboa

Dr. Maria Esteve-Gassent and Dr. Angela Arenas-Gamboa, assistant professors at the CVM, were recently accepted into the Advance Scholar Program at Texas A&M University. The program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), seeks to increase the diversity of female faculty in all levels of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at Texas A&M.

Texas A&M Researchers and International Collaboration Identify a ‘Supergene’

The ruff is a Eurasian shorebird that has a spectacular “lekking” behavior where highly ornamented males gather in a single location and compete for females. Now two groups, including one led by researchers at the CVM, report that males with alternative reproductive strategies carry a chromosomal rearrangement, leading to three types of ruffs, for about 4 million years.

South Africa abounds in wildlife and livestock and is an ideal One Health platform for collaborations in transboundary infectious and parasitic diseases. Smith receives American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnostics’ Richard Walker Bacteriology award

Courtney Smith, a first-year veterinary student and Ph.D. student in veterinary pathobiology at the CVM was recently awarded the Richard Walker Bacteriology award. The award acknowledges the best student presentation at the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnostics (AAVLD) annual meeting held this year on Oct. 24 in Providence, Rhode Island.

The State Employee Charitable Campaign Ends Successfully

The 2015 State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) was completed in November. This marked the end of seven fundraisers that benefitted five special organizations: Aggieland Humane Society, Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, Breast Cancer Awareness, Service Dogs, and Camp Agape.
