Healthy Happy Horse Event

Join us for the Healthy Happy Horse event featuring Chris Cox at the Thomas G. Hildebrand DVM ’56 Equine Complex on Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event includes equine education sessions throughout the day, lunch, a ticket to the Chris Cox demonstration, and a meet and greet opportunity after the demonstration.

AVMA Council on Education Accreditation Visit

Thanks all who contributed to this successful COE site team visit. Most importantly, thanks to each and every one of you for making our CVM what it is each and every day. This is a special place—constantly stretching the boundaries of excellence in an inclusive, collaborative environment. Six trained external reviewers and two observers saw that at the site visit.

Honorable Charles “Doc” Anderson Visits the CVM

On Thursday, December 10, State Representative Charles “Doc” Anderson, DVM class of 1981 and 2014 Outstanding Alumnus, visited the CVM. While at the college, he visited with Dr. Green, toured the small and large animal hospital and was briefed on our initiatives and future plans. Representative Anderson also received an update on the construction for the new CVM Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC) and was informed about our plans for the year-long centennial celebration.

Hinrichs Named Texas A&M University System Regents Professor

Dr. Katrin Hinrichs, professor and Patsy Link Chair in Mare Reproductive Studies, in the Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, was one of seven faculty members from Texas A&M University to be named a Regents Professor.

Association of Former Students Awards

The Texas A&M Association of Former Students recently honored two outstanding CVM faculty members in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (VSCS). Dr. Audrey Cook, associate professor, and Dr. Ashley Saunders, associate professor, received The Association of Former Students College-Level Teaching Award.

Texas A&M Professor Selected as AAVMC 2016 Public Policy Faculty Fellows Participant

The CVM announced the selection of Dr. Jeffrey Musser, clinical professor in the Veterinary Pathobiology department, as a participant in the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges’ (AAVMC) 2016 Public Policy Faculty Fellows.

New Endowed Scholarships Will Soon Be Available

Two new scholarships will be available for the academic year in approximately 24 months. These scholarships are: the Class of ’81 Endowed Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine and the Class of ’94 Endowed Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine. Direct descendants of members of these two classes will receive preference for scholarship support. There are now 32 endowed class scholarships.

Texas A&M Global Partnership Receives Award to Create Novel Curriculum for “Bench-to-Shop” Training

Texas A&M AgriLife Research announced that the CVM and the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD), of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Center of Excellence, have been awarded a $1.2 million contract by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate to develop and implement a nationwide scientific business development and management educational program.

One Health Transboundary Wildlife Biologist Visits Texas A&M

Wildlife biologist and veterinarian Scott Newman, is the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Senior Technical Coordinator for Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases in Vietnam. He was hosted by Texas A&M One Health Initiative during November 2015.

Join us for the 23rd annual See Spot Run race on Feb. 13 at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex. See Spot Run is a fundraising event held annually by the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA).

PEER Promotes One Health and Diversity

The Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) promoted One Health and diversity at the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CORE4 STEM Expo on Nov. 17 and 18 as well as on Dec. 3, alongside Aggie Pals. PEER offered hands-on activities and presented on science and science careers, emphasizing veterinary medicine.

Womack Honored with AAVMC Excellence in Research Award

The CVM announced the recognition of Dr. James Womack, distinguished professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges’ (AAVMC) 2016 Excellence in Research Award.

Scientists Unlock Genetic Secrets of the Dun Coat in Horses

Today, horses come in a variety of coat colors, but most lack the camouflaging coat of their ancestors. However, a trace of that legacy remains in horses with the dun pattern, which characterized by pale hair covering most of the body, a dark stripe along the back, and zebra-like stripes on the legs. A recent study, published in Nature Genetics, reveals a new mechanism that explains the genetic roots of the dun pattern and uncovers why the pattern does not appear in most domesticated horses.

On Dec. 10, the CVM held the Centennial Holiday Reception at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex Ballroom. The event was attended by CVM faculty and staff as well as their guests.
