CVM Centennial Tailgate
The CVM hosted a tailgate for the Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss game in the courtyard of the new Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex on November 12. The event rounded out a weekend celebration of both the Grand Opening and the 100-year anniversary of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

A recent global clinical trial led by Texas A&M University veterinarian, Dr. Sonya Gordon, published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine shows that early treatment can slow progression of mitral valve disease in dogs.

| USDA-APHIS Training Brings International Visitors to the CVM
The CVM hosted the US Department of Agriculture Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service Veterinary Service (USDA APHIS-VS) Live Bird Market System Continuing Education Training Course October 25-27, 2016. The course was supported by colleagues from the Department of Poultry Science, Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the Texas Animal Health Commission.

| Myers Family Donates Bull Statue for new Veterinary Complex Mark and Karen Myers of Myers Cattle and Land Corporation have donated a large bronze statue to Texas A&M University in honor of Carroll D. Myers. The statue of the Santa Gertrudis bull is displayed at the west entrance of the newly opened Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), which is part of the CVM. The statue, which measures 9 feet tall by 9 feet long, was installed Nov. 4, and was ready for the grand opening of the $120 million state-of-the-art facility on Nov. 11.

Texas A&M Researchers to Establish "Tissue Chip" Validation Center
A team of Texas A&M University researchers, led by Dr. Ivan Rusyn, will be working to advance tissue chip research through a recently awarded $4.2 million grant by the NIH's National Center for Advancing Translation Sciences. This award will establish a state-of-the-art, tissue chip-testing infrastructure, known as Texas A&M Tissue Chip Validation Center.

When researchers try to uncover the cause of disease, they commonly start with two questions: Did a quirk in the patient's genes open the door to illness, or did exposure to environmental factors play havoc with the patient's health?

| Less Risk, More Value: Livestock Biosecurity
in South Africa
Texas A&M University team has been awarded $473,989 by the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service to promote biosecurity with beef, swine, and poultry small-scale livestock farmers in South Africa.
The project's goal is to improve international trade market access.This agreement builds on recent funding that this team received for global training capacity in biorisk management.

| Texas A&M One Health Student Researchers Tackle Societal Issues
Two Texas A&M students, Clara Bush (veterinary student), and Jarius Pulczinski (graduate student), participated in the thirteen-week on- campus summer Veterinary Medical Scientist Research Training Program (VMSRTP). Their scholarships were sponsored by the Texas A&M One Health Initiative. Each student was provided the opportunity to address a societal need, conduct hands-on research and identify One Health solutions working alongside accomplished faculty mentors.

The Class of 2006 reunion was held on Oct. 22. As part of their visit, the group toured the new VBEC facility and attended a watch party for the Texas A&M vs. Alabama game.

| Dr. Laura Peycke, a clinical associate professor in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery, and Dr. Elizabeth Martinez, an associate professor in Small Animal
Anesthesiology, earned College- Level Teaching Awards from the Association of Former Students.
Dr. Kenita Rogers and Dr. Karen Cornell presented the awards at the Retired Faculty Brunch on Nov. 11.
Jennie L. Lamb, a graphic designer in CVM Communications and president of the Brazos Valley chapter of the International Association of Business Communications (IABC), was honored as the 2016 IABC Southern Region Communicator of the Year, in recognition of her demonstrated excellence in the communication profession and leadership in the association, at the IABC Southern Region Conference on Oct. 15.
She also received an IABC Southern Region Silver Quill Award of Excellence for the Brazos Valley IABC 2015 Annual Report. In addition to her local duties, Jennie
is a member of the IABC Southern Region Communications Committee and the 2017 IABC World Conference Program Advisory Committee.
