Participants in the training program will gain the following benefits:

  • Developing the “Bench to Shop” mindset to facilitate transition of basic and applied research tools
  • Networking opportunities between universities, minority-serving institutions (MSIs), federal agencies, and a variety of international and business partners
  • Training in project management to improve chances of grant funding and project success
  • Unique training experience that provides a cross-pollination of multiple disciplines and soft skills to showcase the entire pipeline of moving a research idea through to commercialization

Once the entire program has been completed, participants will earn a Certificate in Scientific Business Development and Management. In the future, this program could be applicable across diverse scientific disciplines for the Department of Homeland Security, beyond the scope of Transboundary Animal Diseases (TAD) Research and Development (R&D) work.

In the long-term, this program will assist in creating and/or maintaining a workforce experienced in working with Tiers 1-3 pathogens. This workforce will support the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.
