May 2013

  • Operation Migratory Bird Tick is underway!  For a short time period of the spring migration, we've teamed up with bird banders from the Smithsonian Institute who run an awesome mist netting operation on Mad Island, TX Gulf Coast.  We look forward to learning more about the ticks brought in with the migrants!  The Smithsonian crew keeps a weekly blog.  You can read to learn more about their recent 'Fallout' experience as well as our tick collections: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/SCBI/MigratoryBirds/Research/Mad-Island/

  • Thanks for a great semester, Matthew and Tyler.  Matthew is off to start DVM training at Kansas State, and Tyler will finish his last year in the Forensics program before starting medical school.
  • Sarah wrapped up her first semester teaching VIBS 413 Epidemiology... eager to see the student reviews and ways to improve next year.
  • Carolyn heads to University of Texas-El Paso to learn culture and metacyclogenesis techniques for Trypanosoma cruzi.  Thank you to Drs. Igor Almeida and Rosa Maldonado for hosting Carolyn.  This trip is supported in part by a CVM Advanced Training competitive funding proposal.
