Before students returned from their holiday break, the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) devoted an entire day for professors to focus on the teaching aspects of their jobs.

The third annual CVM Teaching Showcase, on Jan. 4, included 16 presentations from faculty about their teaching approaches and research about teaching and curriculum within the college. In all, more than 60 other faculty members who teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses presented and attended, according to Dr. Virginia Fajt, a clinical associate professor in the CVM’s Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology (VTPP) department.

“The showcase is an event designed to promote sharing of teaching ideas and scholarship within the CVM. It does that well, in my opinion, and there is a great feeling of a shared mission about excellence in teaching,” Fajt said.

This year, Dr. James McGee, assistant dean for medical education technology and the director of the Laboratory for Educational Technology at the University of Pittsburgh College of Medicine, addressed the group on engaging the current generation of students, active learning, and uses of technology.

Comments on the showcase from a survey sent after the event included that faculty enjoyed learning what different faculty members are doing in their classrooms.

“It is an excellent opportunity to learn about what others are doing to advance teaching in the CVM,” one respondent said.

The third annual Teaching Showcase was sponsored by Bridges Teaching Academy, the CVM Professional Programs Office, and the VTPP department.
