One Health and CVM Represented at Veterinary Biologics Course

Dr. Rosina “Tammi” Krecek, interim assistant dean of One Health, and Dr. Angela Arenas, assistant professor in the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences’ (CVMBS) Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (VTPB), participated in the Veterinary Biologics Training Program in Ames, Iowa, from May 16-20, 2016.

This annual training is organized by the Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics (IICAB), Iowa State University, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Center for Veterinary Biologics. This was the 21st year that the course was presented.

Activities included lectures, hands-on experientials, and a visit to the National Centers for Animal Health (NCAH). NCAH houses the three United States Department of Agriculture units: National Animal Disease Center, National Veterinary Services Laboratories, and Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB). IICAB is an OIE Collaborating Center for the Diagnosis of Animal Diseases and Vaccine Evaluation in the Americas.

The weeklong Veterinary Biologics Training Program was presented by USDA CVB staff who have extensive hands-on experience with veterinary biologics. This training was a valuable overview for veterinarians and animal health scientists working with veterinary products such as vaccines, bacterins and bacterial extracts, toxoids, bacterin-toxoids, antitoxins, antiserums and antibodies, diagnostics, immunomodulators and immunostimulants, and allergenic extracts. In addition, requirements for research planning, regulatory, and compliance aspects in this field were included.
