Dr. Shannon Washburn, a clinical professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), is one of five faculty members across campus recently recognized by the Texas A&M Student Government Association (SGA) for her efforts to utilize and champion Open Educational Resources (OERs) in her classes.

OERs include free teaching and learning materials such as textbooks, course modules, videos, and more.

The OER Awards recognize faculty who promote or contribute to a culture of utilizing free academic resources, therefore lessening the financial burden on students and reducing the overall cost of receiving an education.

Washburn was nominated for the award by students who have benefited from her usage of OERs in the classroom.

“Dr. Washburn has consistently created online modules with Canvas to provide students with interactive learning opportunities in her physiology course,” one former student said. “Having the ability to walk through modules and videos crafted by our professor for free has helped so much with understanding hard topics. She also ensures we have all the resources needed, from PDFs to PowerPoints to condensed written notes. There isn’t a learning style that Dr. Washburn doesn’t take the time to cover.”

Washburn was recognized at an awards ceremony in late March and received a $250 cash prize. The OER Awards are sponsored by the SGA, the Texas A&M University Libraries, and the Texas A&M University administration.
