{"id":11427,"date":"2020-05-14T09:09:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T14:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/?p=11427"},"modified":"2021-07-20T14:28:13","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T19:28:13","slug":"cvm-faculty-recognized-with-afs-distinguished-achievement-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/press-releases\/cvm-faculty-recognized-with-afs-distinguished-achievement-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"CVM Faculty Recognized With AFS Distinguished Achievement Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Five faculty members at the Texas A&amp;M College of Veterinary Medicine &amp; Biomedical Sciences (CVM) have been honored with this year\u2019s Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Association of Former Students (AFS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university-level AFS awards are presented each year to faculty and staff who exhibit the highest standards of excellence at Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the CVM had the most awardees from any college or division, with recipients honored in more than half of the award categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11431\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Chaney-Kristin-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Kristin Chaney\" class=\"wp-image-11431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Chaney-Kristin-small.jpg 320w, https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Chaney-Kristin-small-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Kristin Chaney<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dr-kristin-chaney\">Dr. Kristin Chaney<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/profile\/5298\/KristinChaney\">Chaney<\/a>, a clinical assistant professor in the CVM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vibs.tamu.edu\/\">Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences (VIBS)<\/a>, was recognized for teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaney contributes to multiple courses within the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) curriculum, often using her experience in equine medicine to teach on a variety of subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Chaney\u2019s passion for teaching, her command of her discipline, and her various teaching methodologies is very apparent in the classroom setting,\u201d one nominator said. \u201cIn addition to being a knowledgeable and effective teacher, Dr. Chaney also cares greatly for her students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a member of the CVM\u2019s Professional Programs Office (PPO), Chaney helps develop the DVM program curriculum and works to advance veterinary education both within the CVM and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC). She was also recently recognized with a <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/for-deans-corner\/cornell-chaney-recognized-for-meritorious-service-by-aavmc\/\">Presidential Award for Meritorious Service from the AAVMC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs one of the lucky few who have been able to experience Dr. Chaney\u2019s radiant energy, I can attest to her outstanding ability to accommodate a variety of student performance levels, her genuine care for every student, and her exceptional communication skills,\u201d said another nominator and former student of Chaney\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11433\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Brian-Porter-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Brian Porter\" class=\"wp-image-11433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Brian-Porter-small.jpg 320w, https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Brian-Porter-small-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Brian Porter<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dr-brian-porter\">Dr. Brian Porter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/profile\/1211\/BrianPorter\">Porter<\/a>, a clinical professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vtpb.tamu.edu\/\">Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (VTPB)<\/a>, also was recognized for teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He instructs veterinary students in the areas of pathology and diagnostic medicine and also supervises the veterinary anatomic pathology combined residency-Ph.D. program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Porter is an excellent role model who embodies leadership traits and possesses the unique ability to relay information to students\/residents that is easy to understand and retain,\u201d one nominator said. \u201cDr. Porter has played a critical role in the success of the residency program at Texas A&amp;M University.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porter serves as both a teacher and mentor for his students, with many former students saying he inspired them to pursue careers in pathology. He has also been recognized with the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award from Zoetis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has taken modern teaching methods in stride and keeps the students\u2019 attention and interest with interactive lectures, gaining excellent student evaluations along the way,\u201d another nominator said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dr-gregory-johnson\">Dr. Gregory Johnson<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11435\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Gregory-Johnson-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Gregory Johnson\" class=\"wp-image-11435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Gregory-Johnson-small.jpg 320w, https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Gregory-Johnson-small-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Gregory Johnson<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/profile\/409\/GregoryJohnson\">Johnson<\/a>, a professor in VIBS, was recognized for research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work at the CVM studies the interactions between the embryo\/fetus and uterus during pregnancy, with the ultimate goal of reducing pregnancy loss in women, livestock, and companion animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy every measure of excellence and international recognition, Dr. Johnson is a research leader in his field of reproductive biology,\u201d one nominator said. \u201cDr. Johnson has established himself as a highly accomplished researcher and truly outstanding teacher and mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Johnson\u2019s laboratory has studied the unique physiology of pigs and sheep to establish many of the key molecules involved in initial attachment of the placenta to the uterus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He found that the protein osteopontin (OPN) has diverse roles in mammalian pregnancies, including nutrient transport, homing of immune cells to the uterus during pregnancy, and the genesis of new blood vessels in the uterus and placenta required to support fetal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Johnson\u2019s pioneering research, contagious enthusiasm, and common sense have thrust him into positions of high professional responsibility,\u201d another nominator said. \u201cHe is frequently called upon to review research papers and grant proposals; he has served on the editorial boards of the most prestigious journals in the field of reproductive biology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11438\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/J\u00f6rg-Steiner-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. J\u00f6rg M. Steiner<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/profile\/947\/J%C3%B6rgMSteiner\">Steiner<\/a>, a University Distinguished Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vscs.tamu.edu\/\">Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (VSCS)<\/a>, was recognized for extension, outreach, continuing education, and professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/gilab\/\">Gastrointestinal (GI) Laboratory<\/a>, he oversees a staff of scientists, technicians, and student assistants as they perform testing services to help veterinarians around the world diagnose and treat gastrointestinal diseases in dogs and cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Steiner collaborated with numerous colleagues not only from veterinary but also from human medicine from all over the world,\u201d one nominator said. \u201cThe comparative aspects of his work are of great interest and help to generate funding, demonstrated by the impressive number of his (competitive) research grants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steiner is also a world leader in the study of canine and feline pancreatitis, having devoted much of his research career to developing the first accurate and reliable method to test for these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Steiner\u2019s impact on the practice of small animal veterinary gastroenterology has been profound,\u201d another nominator said. \u201cHis research and study of both canine and feline pancreatic diseases over a span of 16 years helped to revolutionize the diagnostic approach to this condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dr-stephen-safe\">Dr. Stephen Safe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11440\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Steve-Safe-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Stephen Safe\" class=\"wp-image-11440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Steve-Safe-small.jpg 320w, https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/05\/Steve-Safe-small-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Stephen Safe<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/profile\/1464\/StephenSafe\">Safe<\/a>, a Distinguished Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physiology.tamu.edu\/\">Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology (VTPP)<\/a>, was recognized for graduate mentoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/cellular-oncology-lab\/\">Molecular &amp; Cellular Oncology Laboratory<\/a>, also known as the Safe Lab, he mentors graduate students as they work to develop anticancer agents and a new class of drugs for treating endometriosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Safe has been an extraordinarily supportive and highly inspiring mentor to many graduate students, including myself,\u201d said one nominator, who previously worked in the Safe Lab. \u201cHe has mentored a plethora of graduate students, the majority of whom have highly productive scientific careers.
