Larry Suva
Professor Department of Veterinary Physiology & PharmacologyResearch and Scholarly Interests
Dr. Suva’s entire research focus is on the skeletal consequences of disease. These interests include breast cancer bone metastasis, multiple myeloma, fracture healing, bone regeneration and bone anabolism.
Dr. Larry J. Suva has been the Department Head of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology (VTPP) in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) at Texas A&M University since November 2015. Suva, a native of Australia and as of 2009 a US citizen, was the inaugural holder of the Carl L. Nelson Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Creativity and tenured Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, prior to joining Texas A&M University. Suva earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Swinburne University, Melbourne Australia in 1981, and doctorate in Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1989. He performed postdoctoral research at Merck Research Laboratories during the development of the world’s first osteoporosis treatment, Fosamax. He subsequently accepted a position on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, serving as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital for 5 years. Suva also served as Associate Director of Bone and Cartilage Biology at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for drug discovery in the area of the stimulation of bone formation. His team characterized several bone active agents and initiated numerous phase I and phase II clinical trials. Suva’s internationally recognized research program has specifically focused on the skeletal consequences of disease. Dr Suva has served as an elected member of the Council of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), been accepted into the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and elected President of the Advances in Mineral Metabolism.

Current research efforts include a focus on in vivo models (murine and larger animals) to discover regulatory pathways important for bone physiology and the development of rare bone disease pre-clinical model(s). Bone research using larger animal species has the potential to change the study of bone turnover and provide novel insight into future therapeutic directions. Most recently, Dr. Suva’s lab in collaboration with VTPP and VIBS faculty have developed the first sheep model of hypophophatasia, a rare bone disease of altered alkaline phosphatase activity.
My involvement undergraduate and graduate courses explores the endocrine regulation of the skeleton and the impact of the skeleton on host physiology. My involvement in the courses provides a framework upon which to build a basic understanding of bone and muscle physiology.
