Biography

"I am a clinician scientist with advanced training in both cell biology and veterinary orthopedic surgery. After obtaining a DVM and completing a rotating internship at the University of Tennessee, I obtained training in cell biology techniques, as well as more advanced techniques such as gene silencing, cloning, mutagenesis, and viral-mediated gene transfer. Most importantly, I gained expertise with Dr. George Davis’ three-dimensional invasion, morphogenesis, and vascular regression systems. My PhD dissertation described a novel MMP-1 and MMP-10 dependent vascular regression pathway, and subsequent research focused on the role of MT1-MMP and Tissue Inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) in endothelial cell lumen formation and stabilization, a process that requires endothelial-pericyte interactions. I published two first author papers with Dr. Davis, and was a co-author on several other publications, most notably a 2006 Nature paper (second author status). After completing my training with Dr. Davis, I concluded my clinical training with a small animal surgical residency. I gained expertise in arthroscopic joint surgery, internal and external fixation of fractures, surgical correction of limb deformities, total hip replacement, and osteochondral grafting. Collectively, I have 20 years of experience with endothelial cell and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) culture and veterinary orthopedic surgery.

During the initial stages of my career as faculty, I established a fully equipped and independent cell biology lab. We have developed techniques to isolate and characterize adult MSCs from a variety of species. The lab’s mission is to advance the field of canine orthopedics and stem cell therapy for the mutual benefit of veterinary and human orthopedic patients. To date the lab’s efforts have been focused on characterizing canine MSCs for bone and cartilage tissue engineering translational models, development of bone and cartilage tissue engineering devices, and performing clinical trials to determine efficacy of both surgical and medical treatments for debilitating orthopedic conditions.

I am currently the Service Chief for Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery (a team composed of a 18-20 faculty, house officers, and technicians). Clinical activities include diagnosis and treatment of canine and feline bone and joint disorders, including arthroscopic joint surgery, minimally invasive fracture repair, joint replacement, and correction of angular limb deformities. In this setting, I also prescribe non-surgical treatments for osteoarthritis, from NSAIDs and PS-GAGs/HA products to joint supplements and special joint diets. In 2021, I became the Assistant Department Head for Clinical Trials and Biobanking in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (VSCS). In this capacity, I advise the Office of Veterinary Clinical Investigation and our expanding biorepository of canine tumor, blood, stem cells and tissue specimens."
