Food Animal Wetlab

NOTE POLICY CHANGE:

Texas A&M Students:Participation in Food Animal Wetlab is FREE to all members of SCAABP, SCAASRP and SCAASP however, we are now requiring EVERY STUDENT to give a $30 check addressed to SCAABP which should be handed to your SCAABP class representative by Friday, December 1st. Please include your name and class year on the check. This check will be returned following lunch when each student receives their t-shirt. If you fail to retrieve your check, we will then use it to offset the costs of putting on this major event. Cancellations made by January 11th will be refunded in full. No personal information will be shared anywhere.

Non-Texas A&M Students: The cost for participation in Food Animal Wetlab is $15 in the form of a check addressed to SCAABP by January 4th. With your payment, please include your name, school, phone number, and email so that we can correctly identify you. No personal information will be shared anywhere. Cancellations made by January 11th will be refunded in full.

Cancellation deadline is Wednesday January 11th. We hold the right to cash your check if we are not informed of your cancelation on prior to this date.

Breeding Soundness Exam

Students will get hands on experience performing all aspects of a bovine breeding soundness exam, as well as proper sample collection for a Trichomonas Test. Live bulls will be used for this lab. Best Fit: 3VMs

Casting/Knot Tying

A live steer will be used to demonstrate and practice the art of casting for recumbent procedures as well as allow students an opportunity to practice various knots that are used in everyday veterinary medicine. Best Fit: 1VMs

Castration

Students will learn the different methods of castration, complications of surgery, and risks associated with castration. They will perform castrations on calves with a Newberry knife and Henderson tool. Best Fit: 1VMs

Claw Amputations & Ankylosis

Students will learn the indications for claw amputation and will perform the procedure as it is done in the field on cadaver limbs, including anesthesia, incision placement, removal of the claw, and proper bandaging. Follow-up procedures and prognosis for production will also be discussed. Best Fit: 3VMs

Enucleation

Students will learn and practice proper procedures involved with enucleation and other various surgical techniques on cadaver heads. During this lab, different equipment and injection sites for local anesthesia will be discussed. Best Fit: 3VMs

Epidurals/Local Anesthesia

Students will perform a caudal epidural and observe a paralumbar block on cows. Review of important structures and applications for administering local anesthesia will be reviewed. Best Fit: 3VMs

Medical Abdominal Ultrasound

Students will get to practice their ultrasounding skills for identification of abdominal organs in bovids. This is NOT a reproductive ultrasound. Best Fit: Anyone

Bovine Necropsy – 2 HOURS

Students will learn to perform a full necropsy on a cow or small ruminant and discuss normal as well as abnormal tissue appearance resulting from disease processes. Cadavers will be used for demonstration during this lab. You must provide your own rubber boots. This will be a TWO HOUR LAB, so students will not be able to enroll in the hour following each lab. Best Fit: 2VMs

Small Ruminant Dehorning

Students will learn how to use proper surgical procedures required to dehorn using a goat cadaver. They will also discuss local anesthesia for small ruminants. Best Fit: 2VMs

Small Ruminant Reproductive Ultrasound

Students will learn how to correctly use transabdominal ultrasonography for pregnancy detection in goats. Also, more detailed skills such as fetal aging, finding fetal heart beats, and counting fetuses will be covered in the lab. Best Fit: 1VMs

Swine Necropsy

Students will learn how to properly perform a post mortem examination on a pig with emphasis being placed on how to obtain proper tissue samples necessary for diagnostic testing. Students will have the opportunity to discuss normal, as well as, abnormal findings in individual cadavers. Cadavers will be used for demonstration during this lab. This is a TWO HOUR LAB, so students will not be able to enroll in the following each lab. Best fit: 2VMs

Bovine Liver Biopsy

Students will be instructed on how to perform a liver biopsy including how to prep the patient for the procedure and technique for performing a biopsy. The reasoning and benefits of performing a biopsy will also be discussed. Best Fit: 2VM

Ruminant Cesarean Section

Students will learn proper surgical technique in performing a cesarean section on a goat cadaver. They will also learn local anesthetic blocks associated with the surgery. This will be a TWO HOUR LAB, so students will not be able to enroll in the hour following each lab. ONLY FOR: 3VM

Students will review the reproductive anatomy of the female bovine reproductive tract and learn how to process bull semen. Students will learn a how to freeze bovine semen and other methods for shipping will be discussed. Lastly, there will be the opportunity to practice artificial insemination on multiple reproductive tracts. This will be a TWO HOUR LAB, so students will not be able to enroll in the hour following each lab. Best fit: Anyone

Dystocia

Students in this lab will learn the basic techniques to pulling calves during a dystocia. Students will use fetal cadavers and simulated uteruses to practice proper calf-pulling techniques. Best Fit: Anyone
