Surgery (SVSC)

Texas A&M VMBS Student Veterinary Surgeon’s Club

Mission and Purpose:

The Student Veterinary Surgeons Club’s (SVSC) mission and purpose is to provide opportunities for veterinary students of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to engage in topics of veterinary surgery outside of the general curriculum.  We aim to provide students with educational lunch meetings, wet labs, and clinical exposure that will help expand their surgical knowledge and practical expertise.

Meetings:

We have monthly meetings at which board certified surgeons and surgical residents present a surgical procedure/topic in detail as well as share a bit about their journey to becoming veterinary surgeons.  Look on the calendar page for our meeting dates! Topics cover a wide range of veterinary specialties, from small animal to food animal and exotics to equine.

Some topics that have been presented in the past:

  • Tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy (TPLO)
  • Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)
  • Bovine C-section
  • Emergency Sx on Snakes/Reptiles
  • Q&A Session w/ Equine Surgeon
  • What does it mean to be a veterinary surgeon?

Wet Labs/Field Trips

We host two suturing wet labs every year – one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester.  These are meant to expose first and second years to the art of suturing and helping them lay a good foundation of proper technique.  Third years can also take advantage of these opportunities and get in more practice time while also getting to help teach.

In the upcoming Spring semester of 2014, we are planning on a field trip to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, TX to tour the facilities and meet with practicing board-certified surgeons to learn more about veterinary surgery in a private practice setting.
