Schubot Directors Award

The Schubot Avian Health Director’s Award was established in 2019 in honor of Dr. Ian Tizard (Director from 1999-2017). The award recognizes an undergrad, graduate, or veterinary student Schubot member who has demonstrated research excellence on topics related to the health, conservation, genetics, or related topics pertaining to wild, exotic, or pet birds, and/or has contributed to the mission and operations of the Schubot Center for Avian Health. Nominations are accepted annually each Spring via email submission to Sarah Hamer.  The award is given annually in April at the Spring Convocation Ceremony for the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Self-nominations accepted.  A certificate and small cash award is given to recipients.  Details are in the nomination form.

Student Opportunities

Applications for undergraduate student assistants are currently being accepted. Please email the completed applications to Debra Turner.
(Note: Student avian caretakers care for birds by providing food and water; providing clean micro and macro environments; and assisting in facility maintenance.)

Applications for student technicians are currently being accepted. Please email the completed applications to Debra Turner.
(Note: In addition to aviary student caretaker activities, student technicians work closely with board-certified avian veterinarians to handle health issues and administer medications to the birds at the aviary.)


Grants

Avian Research Mini Grant (up to $2,500 each): Fall 2021 Deadline: January 31, 2024. The intended objective of these awards is to facilitate data collection by members of the Schubot Center to advance avian research, with an emphasis on avian health, conservation, genetics, behavior, or related fields. Avian Research Travel Grants (up to $1,000 each): Fall 2021 Deadline: January 31, 2024. The intended objective of these awards is to support travel for Schubot Center members to engage in activities to learn new techniques at workshops or specialized laboratories or field stations, expand collaborative networks, and/or disseminate Texas A&M avian research findings at conferences, with an emphasis on avian health, conservation, genetics, behavior, or related fields.
