Calling ALL Avian Research Enthusiasts

The Schubot Center for Avian Health is an academic research center within the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University. We are an informal avian research think tank and wish to include you!

Our mission is to conduct research into the health of birds, including wild, pet, and exotic birds. Using a One Health approach, we study the health of communities, populations, and individual birds and the environments in which they live.

The Center is funded from an endowment established by the late Mr. Richard Schubot, an enthusiastic breeder of large parrots, who wished to create an avian health research center at Texas A&M University.

Some current research conducted by individuals affiliated with the Schubot Center

  • Psittacine ecology and conservation in Peru and the Southern US
  • Development of rapid diagnostic assays andvaccines for infectious diseases of birds
  • Avian parasites and their impact on health
  • Genome sequencing of endangered avian species
  • Ecological investigations of avian migration and tick-borne disease risk
  • Population genetics of Psittacine
  • Enhancement of avian enrichment and captive breeding approaches
  • Birds as bioindicators of health across Texas
  • Clinical and surgical interventions

There is lots of awesome avian research taking place across campus, and we’d love to join together to enhance the TAMU avian research impact!

Schubot members span multiple departments, including faculty, wildlife biologists, epidemiologists, veterinarians, ecologists, staff, and trainees in various levels (graduate students, undergraduates, veterinary trainees, postdocs). No need for current or past research with Schubot in order to join.

All Texas A&M University students, staff, and faculty are welcome!
