Youth Adventure Program Explores Avian Science at Texas A&M Aviary

The Texas A&M University ‘s Youth Adventure Program-Veterinary Medicine visited the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences’s Aviary July 18th for a few hours.

The middle and high school aged youth learned about Avian Bornavirus vaccine work and what veterinarians collect out in the field through Dr. Caitlin Mencio, toured the facility with aviary manager, Debra Turner, explored the microscopic world of avian parasitology with Dr. Ken Turner, and Lead Care Staff Lauren Petersen delved into how to build and why enrichment is so important to birds. The students made a beautiful amount of enrichment for our birds!

We were thrilled to host such an enthusiastic and curious group of future scientists and veterinarians. Their creativity and engagement brought a fresh energy to the aviary, and our birds are already enjoying the enrichment items they crafted. We hope this visit sparked a lasting interest in avian medicine and conservation!
