Faculty Position Awaits for STJR Graduate, Future Communication PhD

A picture of Marissa Dosh In fall 2014, STJR graduate Marissa Doshi will join the faculty of Hope College in Michigan as an assistant professor. Her course work and internship in the STJR program helped her obtain the position. “Having real-word experience, which was the result of the internship, made me very competitive for the job,” she said. Marissa completed her internship at Texas A&M’s Engineering Communications office.

Marissa, a doctoral student in the communication department at Texas A&M, will use her academic and practical experience to teach undergraduates. One thing she will teach them is that good writing is a timeless skill in the ever-changing job market. “There will be new technologies and new platforms,” she said, “but in writing the basics don’t change.” She learned this as an STJR student.

Marissa grew up in Mumbai, India. In 2003 she obtained a bachelor’s degree in life sciences and biochemistry from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. In 2005 she received a master’s degree in biotechnology from the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland.

Marissa then returned to India to pursue her real passion: communications. She was a copy editor at Cactus Communications until 2008, when she moved to the United States to enroll in the science and technology journalism master’s program.

Marissa received her master’s degree in 2010. Her doctoral work focuses on transnational feminist studies, global media studies, and intercultural communication. In her dissertation, she is analyzing how young women in India use technology to “claim cultural citizenship.” Marissa expects to receive her PhD in December 2014.
