Lafeber’s Parrot Conservation Spotlight July 2024: Climate Change Impact on Parrots & Forests in Tambopata, Peru

We are honored to announce that The Macaw Society has been awarded Lafeber’s Parrot Conservation Spotlight for July 2024!

The $500 award will be used to build new nest boxes for wild macaws, an essential part of our ongoing research. Our project focuses on the impact of climate change on the forests of Tambopata, Peru, and how these changes affect food sources and the breeding success of parrots, especially macaws.

Under the direction of Drs. Donald Brightsmith and Gabriela Vigo-Trauco, we are investigating how climate-driven shifts in forest phenology impact the annual life history patterns of macaws and other parrots. By resurveying forest plots and comparing the data to our long-term parrot nesting records, we aim to understand and predict how future climate changes will affect these magnificent birds.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lafeber for their generous support and for recognizing our conservation efforts.
