Trouble on the Range: New World Screwworm Reappears in Texas

New World screwworm (NWS), or Cochliomyia hominivorax, has recently been reported in eight counties in Texas. New World screwworm poses a significant risk to wildlife, livestock, companion animals, and public health. This myiasis-causing parasitic fly is native to the Americas and can inflict extensive tissue damage and, depending on the severity and anatomical location of the infestation, may be fatal. Female flies lay their eggs in fresh wounds on living, warm-blooded animals.

New World screwworm was eradicated in the United States in 1966 through the release of sterile male flies, but cases have now reemerged. On June 3, 2026, the first report of New World screwworm occurred in Zavala County, Texas.
