The CVM Educates Community Through Open House

The CVM opened its doors to approximately 15,000 members of the community on April 16 for the 23rd Annual Open House. The event is organized by veterinary students, promotes veterinary education, and is fun and engaging for all ages. Activities at Open House included teddy bear surgery, lectures, demonstrations, and photo opportunities.

Deveau Named Katherine and Rebecca Rochelle Chair in Oncology

Dr. Michael Deveau, clinical assistant professor at the CVM, has been named the Katherine and Rebecca Rochelle Chair in Oncology in VSCS. Deveau is a leader in the field of veterinary radiation oncology and will use the funds to continue to expand the field and do research that has a positive impact on both animals and humans with cancer.

Steiner Appointed the Dr. Mark Morris Chair in Small Animal Gasteroenterology and Nutrition

Dr. Joerg Steiner, a professor in VSCS at the CVM, has recently been appointed as the Dr. Mark Morris Chair in Small Animal Gasteroenterology and Nutrition in VSCS. He currently directs the Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Laboratory, a group that includes nearly 40 team members, generates substantial service income for the CVM, and is involved in cutting-edge assay development.

Evolution in Action

In a study published in Science, a research team led by Dr. Leif Andersson, professor at the CVM and Uppsala University in Sweden, has discovered a gene—HMGA2—affecting the variation in beak size in Darwin’s finches.

Texas State Representative Ken King Visits the CVM

The CVM hosted State Representative for House District 88 Ken King, his daughter Karis, and Vice President for Government Relations Michael O’Quinn on April 21. We had an opportunity to share our Serving Every Texan Every Day Initiative, provide a tour of the Small and Large Animal Hospitals led by Student Ambassador Alex Casas, and discuss our new education complex.

Outstanding Alumni Recognition Dinner

Outstanding Alumni and Rising Star honorees accepted their awards at the Outstanding Alumni Recognition Dinner held at the Miramont Country Club on April 1. Through these awards the college honors graduates from the CVM, who have made significant contributions to society through their work.

Graham Named Texas A&M Distinguished Alumnus

CVM alumnus Dr. Charles W. Graham ’53 learned of his Texas A&M Distinguished Alumnus Award honor, the highest honor bestowed by the Association of Former Students, on March 28 at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex. Graham is a top equine veterinarian and a leader in Texas’ horse and cattle industries.

Joel White Wins Student Employee of the Year, Others Recognized

Joel White, a student worker in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital pharmacy, was honored as the Texas A&M Student Employee of the Year. White also received the Class of 1956 Employee Endowed Scholarship, which is worth $3,000. Four other student workers from the CVM were nominated for the Student Employee of the Year Award.

#VetMedUnited Raises Mental Health Awareness

To raise awareness about mental health and wellness among students and practitioners in the veterinary community, the Student American Veterinary Medical Association promoted #VetMedUnited, a hashtag that encourages a dialogue about mental health. Banners with this hashtag were placed in the fishbowl and in the Academic Mall.

Texas A&M One Health Initiative Contributes to AAVMC Conference

The Texas A&M One Health Initiative contributed three presentations at the 2016 AAVMC Conference. Dr. Rosina “Tammi” Krecek, interim assistant dean of the Texas A&M One Health Initiative, presented “Building One Health Research at Texas A&M: A Successful Model,” and two posters highlighted One Health’s experience in Nicaragua during 2015.

African Development Livestock Leader Visits the CVM

Dr. Shirley Tarawali, assistant director general at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya, recently presented a seminar titled “Livestock and the Sustainable Development Goals” at the CVM. Tarawali’s visit was co-hosted by the CVM, Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, and Texas A&M One Health Initiative.

Classes of ’56 and ’66 Reunite

The DVM Classes of ’56 and ’66 reunited at the CVM on April 1, participating in the Outstanding Alumni Recognition Dinner. There, several members of both classes were recognized for their service and dedication to the CVM and the field of veterinary medicine.

EOD Certificates Awarded to CVM Staff

Nine CVM staff received certificates from the Texas A&M Employee and Organizational Development (EOD) following completion of certificate programs in professional development, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, supervisory essentials, constructive communication in the workplace, and desktop publishing.

Aggie CVM Open Golf Tournament

The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association hosted a golf tournament on April 2 to benefit scholarships and professional development. The event included various games, contests, and prizes as well as photos with Reveille.

Clinical Trial in Small Animal Orthopedics Begins

A new clinical trial has recently launched in the Small Animal Orthopedics Service. The purpose of the trial is to compare the clinical outcome and complication rates of two commonly performed extra-articular surgical treatments for cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs. This trial will allow veterinarians to make specific treatment recommendations.

Honors Convocation

Sixty-five honorees were recognized for their hard work and outstanding achievements at the 2016 Honors Convocation on April 1. Attendees included students, faculty, and guests. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the awards equaled a cash value of $38,750.

White Coat Ceremony Honors Second-Year Veterinary Students

Second-year veterinary students received their white coats at the annual White Coat Ceremony held in Rudder Theatre on April 1. The ceremony marks the transition of veterinary students from the classroom to the clinic.

Welcome Dr. Karen Cornell, the New Associate Dean for Professional Programs

Dr. Karen Cornell was recently hired as the associate dean for professional programs. She will be deeply involved in changes to the curriculum as well as interfacing with administration, faculty, and students. In this role, Cornell sees teamwork and relationship building as the keys to success.

Katharina Ojala joins the CVM as Graduate Advisor

Katharina Ojala joined the CVM as a Graduate Academic Advisor. She provides information and advice to enrolled and prospective graduate students regarding the academic programs offered by the college.

Stephanie Hollis Joins the CVM as Events Coordinator

Stephanie Hollis joined the CVM in April as the alumni relations and events manager. She is responsible for promoting communication and engagement between all CVM former students and the college.

CVM Picnic

CVM faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend the CVM Picnic on May 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lameness Pavilion. Barbecue and ice cream will be served.

Second Annual Thomas “Mac” Devin, DVM Memorial Sporting Clays

Please join us on June 3 for the Second Annual Thomas “Mac” Devin, DVM Memorial Sporting Clays. The event includes a steak dinner, 100 sporting clays, and a Yeti tumbler with a custom logo. Teams of four will be registered by the CVM Continuing Education Office, and the event is open to all.
