Services

Biopsy Service

The Biopsy Service in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (VTPB) handles tissue samples from patients of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The timely reports provided by pathologists allow clinicians to make accurate diagnoses and properly tailor treatment. The service examines 900–1000 biopsies per year.

For information related to biowaste contact Josh Freeman (jfreeman@cvm.tamu.edu) or Alen Merdzo (amerdzo@cvm.tamu.edu).

Clinical Microbiology/Immunology Service

The Clinical Microbiology/Immunology group provides laboratory diagnostic tests and consultation for clinicians, develops diagnostic tests, supports faculty research, and teaches students how to use appropriate laboratory tests and how to interpret test results on how to best care for their veterinary patients.

Contact Dr. Sara Lawhon or Dr. Artem Rogovskyy for information related to clinical microbiology at SLawhon@cvm.tamu.edu or ARogovskyy@cvm.tamu.edu.

Clinical Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory

From microscopic to macroscopic, parasites come in all sizes and shapes and cause a myriad of animal (and human) health issues. The Clinical Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory supports the VMTH, as well as private veterinary practitioners in association with the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL), to offer a wide variety of diagnostic services.

Visit the Clinical Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory Website for more information, or contact the lab for information related to clinical parasitology at 979.845.5180 or parasitologyDX@cvm.tamu.edu.

Clinical Pathology Service

Veterinary Clinical Pathology, also referred to as Laboratory Medicine, studies disease in animals through the examination of blood, tissues, and fluids. The discipline covers a wide range of laboratory assays and methods, oversees the quality and accuracy of laboratory tests, and assists clinicians with diagnosis, patient care, and prevention of disease. The laboratory supports clinicians and researchers in the college and also trains resident veterinarians in the specialty of clinical pathology through a nationally recognized residency program.

For information related to clinical pathology call 979.845.9180.

Dermatopathology Service

The Dermatopathology Service provides the quality interpretation of skin biopsy specimens from veterinary dermatologists, general veterinary clinicians, and university veterinary teaching hospitals by a dermatopathologist (a board-certified veterinary pathologist who has specialized in dermatopathology).

Visit the Dermatopathology Services website for more information.

Digital Imaging & Gel Documentation Facility

The department has a fully functional core facility for the computer-based acquisition of images, image editing and analysis, and other shared research instrumentation.

Visit the Digital Imaging & Gel Documentation Facility webpage for more information,
or contact Dr. Gus Wright at 979.458.9859 or GWright@cvm.tamu.edu.

DNA Technologies Laboratory

The DNA Technologies Laboratory provides automated nucleotide sequencing, genotyping, and bacterial and fungal DNA sequence-based identification technologies. It also offers individual identification, parentage testing, and genetic trait testing for livestock producers, wildlife managers, and clinical microbiology labs worldwide. The lab houses shared capital equipment used by researchers and students throughout the college.

Visit the DNA Technologies Laboratory website for more information or contact Dr. Gus Wright at 979.458.9859 or GWright@cvm.tamu.edu.

Flow Cytometry Facility

The Flow Cytometry Facility (FCF), equipped with a Beckman Coulter MoFlo® Astrios™ High-Speed Cell Sorter and a Becton Dickinson FACSCalibur™ Analyzer, serves scientists in the department, college, and university.

Visit the FCF webpage for more information.
or contact Dr. Gus Wright at 979.458.9859 or GWright@cvm.tamu.edu.

International Veterinary Renal Pathology Service

The mission of the International Veterinary Renal Pathology Service (IVRPS) is to improve health care for individual patients with kidney disease and generate new knowledge about renal diseases in animals by expertly performing thorough pathologic evaluations of kidney specimens obtained from dogs and cats, and other animals.

Visit the IVRPS website for more information.

Necropsy Service

The Necropsy Service in VTPB performs necropsies/autopsies on patients from the VMTH. Tissue samples collected during necropsy are examined microscopically by board-certified pathologists in order to answer clinical questions. This service also trains resident veterinarians in the specialty of anatomic pathology through a residency program and all fourth-year veterinary students spend two weeks in the service to better understand the pathogenesis of the diseases and ancillary testing requests to achieve the final diagnosis. The remains of the necropsy/autopsy are disposed of by private cremation per the owner’s wishes or aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis).

Contact Raven Arredondo for information related to necropsy service at 979.862.8485 or pathologydx@cvm.tamu.edu.

Veterinary Biorepository

The mission of the Biorepository is to collect and store biological samples and associated clinical information from healthy and diseased animals. These samples are made available to the scientific community to investigate the genetic and molecular basis of traits and diseases in animals.

Contact Dr. Scott Dindot at SDindot@cvm.tamu.edu.

VMBS Histology Core Laboratory

The VMBS Histology Core Laboratory provides diagnostic services for the VMTH and research services to the VMBS, VMTH, other Texas A&M University System resources, and extramural entities. These services include routine sectioning and staining of tissues for microscopic examination, performing special stains, and performing immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry for diagnostic and research samples. The laboratory also provides digital pathology and pathology consultation/collaboration services.
