Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research Symposium

On Jan. 27 and 28 a record number of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at the CVM participated in the 2016 Spring Research Symposium. The symposium consisted of both oral and poster presentations. The two-day program accommodated more than 80 presenters.

A banquet and awards dinner at Pebble Creek Country Club honored participants and recognized the top poster and platform presentations. The poster and platform presentation winners are listed below:

Graduate Student Poster Presentations

  • 1st place: Sabrina Clark (VTPB, mentor: Dr. Mary Nabity)
  • 2nd place: Megha Bijalwan (VIBS, mentor: Dr. Jane Welsh)
  • 2nd place: Amanda Blake (VSCS, mentor: Dr. Jan Suchodolski)
  • 2nd place: Quinci Plumlee (VTPB, mentor: Dr. Joanne Mansell)

Graduate Student Platform Presentations

  • 1st place: Joana Rocha (VLCS, mentor: Dr. Noah Cohen)
  • 2nd place: Blake Guard (VSCS, mentor: Dr. Jan Suchodolski)
  • 3rd place: Shenhaz Lokhandwala (VTPB, mentor: Dr. Waithaka Mwangi)

Postdoctoral Presentations

  • 1st place: Dr. Sunja Kim (VIBS, mentor: Dr. Jianrong Li)
  • 2nd place: Dr. Xi Li (VTPP, mentor: Dr. Stephen Safe)

People’s Choice Platform Presentation Award*

  • Joana Rocha (VLCS, mentor: Dr. Noah Cohen)

The High Impact Achievement Awards were also presented to graduate student and postdocs whose achievements are above and beyond general expectations. The awards were given in three categories, and the winners are listed below:

Large Grant Recipient (grant exceeds $50,000)

  • Dr. Joseph Cichocki (VIBS, mentor: Dr. Ivan Rusyn) in recognition of his receipt of a NIH-NIEHS Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Alyssa Meyers (VIBS, mentor: Dr. Sarah Hamer) in recognition of her receipt of a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Small Grant Recipient (grant is less than $50,000)

  • Dr. Fabian Grimm (VIBS, mentor: Dr. Ivan Rusyn) in recognition of his receipt of a Society of Toxicology Colgate-Palmolive Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in In Vitro Toxicology
  • Dr. Jessica Rodriguez (VTPP, mentor: Dr. Karen Snowden) in recognition of her receipt of a National Center for Veterinary Parasitology Advanced Study/Residency Fellowship

High Impact First Author Publication
