A paper by Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) professor of large animal internal medicine Noah Cohen was recognized with the “Best Platform Presentation” award at the inaugural Calgary International Equine Symposium.

The award, which included a prize of $10,000, was presented in the international ring during the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament on Sept. 7.

The Calgary International Equine Symposium was founded to focus on innovation and discovery that benefits the health and welfare of horses.

For the inaugural symposium, 16 platform presentations were selected based on submitted abstracts from researchers across Canada, Europe, and the United States. A poster session was also held that was open to graduate students, interns or residents, and faculty members.

The prize was announced prior to the finals of the six-bar jumping event at Spruce Meadows.

“There were a number of outstanding presentations from leaders in equine research, so I was surprised and humbled to have been selected,” said Cohen, who also serves as the director for the CVM’s Equine Infectious Disease Laboratory. “The facilities at the University of Calgary for teaching, patient care, and research pertaining to horses are exceptional. There was also an opportunity for researchers to talk informally about research ideas and collaborations.”
