Capabilities

Our laboratory is equipped to bridge the gap between in vitro models to in vivo experiments in large animals, including horses and livestock. Our lab is well-equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for measuring and modeling aerosol drug delivery, including delivery to primary respiratory cell culture systems. We work together with the AALAC-accredited Veterinary Medical Park to perform animal studies on-site in large animal species.

We are always looking for opportunities to collaborate – please reach out to Dr. Legere for more information about how our resources could be useful for your projects.

Aerosol Delivery

  • Simulated airways:
    • 3-D printed models to simulate the head and upper airway of large animal speciesUSP throat models
  • Breathing Simulators:
    • Inhalation flow cell & high-capacity pumps to simulate inhalation and capture inhaled aerosols for testing
    • Custom-built negative-pressure ventilation chamber for precision respiratory modeling using ex vivo lungs and lung models
      • Research capacity – Can be used to deliver aerosols to inflated, “breathing” lungs and model customized respiratory parameters in ex vivo tissues
      • Teaching capacity – Can be used to teach respiratory interventions (e.g., endoscopy, airway sampling, etc.) and ventilator operation
  • Particle Size Analysis:
    • Andersen cascade impactor
  • Customizable Filter Systems: To collect aerosolized drugs for delivered dose calculation & further analysis
  • Digital viscometer
  • UV/Visible scanning spectrophotometer: To measure drug concentrations in solution (Shimadzu UV-1800)

Cell Culture

  • Digital fluorescent microscope (Evos M5000)
  • Fluorescent cell counter (Countess 3 FL)
  • Biosafety cabinet for BSL-2 work
  • Warming baths – water-based and dry-bead
  • CO2 incubators for BSL-2 work
  • Custom chambers to enable aerosol drug delivery to culture plates
  • Equipment & expertise for isolating primary lung and guttural pouch epithelial cultures
  • Confocal and specialty imaging through Image Analysis Laboratory

Biosensor Technologies

  • Cardiac telemetry/holter monitors (Televet II) with dedicated tablets and heart rate variability analysis
  • Wearable telemetry with ECG, plethysmography, accelerometer, and specialty signal analysis software (EmkaPack5)
  • Patient monitor with ECG, non-invasive and invasive BP, pulse oximetry, and end-tidal CO2 monitoring (Philips Intellivue)
