2010 AAAS Meeting

Feb. 23, 2010 – Dr. Gastel and several STJR students attended the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in San Diego Feb. 18-21. The theme for this year’s meeting was “Bridging Science and Society.”

Students attended a variety of lectures, presentations, and press briefings and availed themselves of a wide variety of networking opportunities and like all graduate students, couldn’t pass up the free pens, booklets, and other goodies in the exhibit hall.

Some of the more interesting events of the conference were presentations on the science of superheroes, the search for extraterrestrial life, and geoengineering, and a presentation featuring the winners of the 2009 Ig Nobel Awards . The conference also attracted protestors who demonstrated against genetically modified organisms and geoengineering.
