Students Attend, Write About Conference

Several science and technology journalism (STJR) students have recently won funding to attend conferences.

Via scholarships supported largely by NASA, students George Hale, Antonio Villarreal, and Emily White attended the Eddy Cross-Disciplinary Symposium on Sun-Climate Research, held 22 to 24 October 2010 in Aspen, Colorado. The students had taken a course in a climate change as an elective for the STJR program.

On 17 to 19 November 2010, Hale, White, and Roma Subramanian attended the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative conference in Irvine, California. The conference focused on imaging science, and the program through which they attended entailed their writing summaries for publication.

Subramanian said attending the conference was enriching. “It was a treat to listen to the lively brainstorming discussions among the group of interdisciplinary scientists I was assigned to.” she said. She noted that summarizing the group’s discussions helped her sharpen her science writing skills.

In January 2011, Subramanian will attend the Beckman Initiative for Macular Research conference in Irvine, California. Her participation will again include writing a summary.
