STJR Updates
Greetings to all as spring semester begins.
Fall-semester highlights for the STJR program included the following:
- Roma Subramanian very successfully defended her master’s thesis. The topic was best practices of journalists winning awards for mental-health reporting.
- The front page of the Texas A&M student newspaper repeatedly featured science stories by first-year student Jessica Orwig.
- Students Katie Cowart and Christina Sumners and graduate Kristina Twigg helped cover an ecosystem conference in California, through scholarships from the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative.
As spring semester begins, Subramanian has entered the journalism doctoral program at the University of Missouri. Cowart has begun an internship at the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, in Atlanta. Recent graduate George Hale has headed to the Washington, DC, area, to begin a job in public outreach for the NASA IceBridge mission.
In February, four students in the program plan to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting, to be held in Vancouver, Canada. Over spring break, a student and a recent graduate are to take part in a meeting in England, through their assistantship work for the AuthorAID project.
