About Veterinary Opioids
This 2.0-hour session is designed to equip the participant with a basic understanding of opioid abuse and controlled substance diversion, as well as inventory recordkeeping and security requirements. The course was designed to meet the opioid training requirements of the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (TBVME). Federal regulations concerning labeling, use, compounding, recordkeeping, and security of prescriptions for controlled drugs are addressed.
Objectives
The participant will develop a basic understanding of opioid abuse and controlled substance diversion. The participant will be able to develop basic knowledge and understanding of inventory and security.
Specific attention is given to the TBVME Rules:
- Rule 573.40: Labeling of Medications Dispensed;
- Rule 573.41: Use of Prescription Drugs;
- Rule 573.42: Use of Scheduled Drugs in Training/Racing;
- Rule 573.44: Compounding Drugs;
- Rule 573.50: Controlled Substances Record-Keeping for Drugs on Hand;
- Rule 573.61: Minimum Security for Controlled Substances; and
- Rule 573.43: Controlled Substance Registration.
Specific attention is given to Title 21 Code of Federal Regulations:
- 1301.11: Persons Required to Register;
- 1301.12: Separate Registrations for Separate Locations;
- 1301.71: Security Requirements;
- 1301.75: Physical Security Controls for Practitioners;
- 1301.76: Other Security Controls;
- 1304.03: Persons Required to Keep Records and File Reports; and
- 1304.04: Maintenance of Records and Inventories.
About the Instructors
Carly Patterson, DVM, DACVIM (SA)
Dr. Carly Patterson is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology (VTPP) at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS). She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and has a special interest in clinical pharmacology. She teaches pharmacology to second-year students in the professional veterinary curriculum.
Amy Savarino, PharmD, FSVHP, DICVP
Dr. Amy Savarino is the chief pharmacist at the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). She is a diplomate of the International College of Veterinary Pharmacy and a fellow and treasurer of the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists. Dr. Savarino has worked in the VMTH pharmacy for 11 years and has been the chief pharmacist since 2018. She serves as director for the Texas A&M Veterinary Pharmacy Residency Program.
