Director & Associate Professor of Veterinary Nutrition
Dr. Katie Tolbert completed her small animal internal medicine residency and Ph.D. at North Carolina State University. She is an associate professor in the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at Texas A&M University and is a member of the Dog Aging Project consortium.
She completed an alternate-track residency in small animal nutrition at the University of Tennessee. Her clinical interests and research program are focused on the treatment of acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases in dogs and cats. Her accomplishments include the 2018 Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence and she has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Ashley is a licensed veterinary nurse with a specialty in nutrition. Prior to her current role, as the assistant director of veterinary nutrition, she had the privilege being a veterinary technician on the Nutrition Service at the University of Tennessee…
… from 2012 to 2024. She achieved her specialty in veterinary nutrition in 2018, and completed her master’s degree at Tennessee in animal science, focusing on equine nutrition in 2023. Her interests include gastrointestinal diseases, critical care nutrition, and chronic kidney disease. Looking forward, she hopes to advocate for the advanced use of veterinary technician specialists within nutrition, advance nutrition research, and support hospitalized and critical care patients.
