The Veterinary Nutrition Service, affiliated with the Gastrointestinal Laboratory (GI Lab), at the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) and its Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) specializes in gastrointestinal and critical care veterinary nutrition, providing the highest level of expertise in these crucial areas. Nutrition plays a significant role in the overall health and well-being of dogs and cats. Ensuring that your pet is eating a proper diet can increase their chances of avoiding common diseases and living longer lives.

About Us

A veterinary nutritionist is a specialist who has training and expertise in advising clients on all aspects of their animal’s nutrition, including metabolism, a balanced diet, and the treatment of nutrition-based health conditions, such as gastrointestinal disorders and food allergies. If your pet has a specific disease or nutritional need, we will provide expert advice. We aim to consider how nutritional interventions can be used to treat our patients’ conditions before prescribing medications. If we feel that your concern is not within our areas of expertise, we will suggest additional resources or contacts to help you find the approach that best meets the needs of you and your pet.

Our Team

Our service is led by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and a licensed veterinary nurse specializing in nutrition.

For Veterinarians

We provide consultations with referring veterinarians on diet recommendations, critical care patient nutrition, and by working directly with clients.

For Clients

We consult with referred clients by scheduled appointment to provide homemade or commercial diet recommendations.

For Students

One of our future goals to provide clinical and research opportunities for students, externs, interns, and residents in veterinary nutrition.

Research

Our service participates in administering clinical trials that evaluate the role of nutrition in the health of patients with gastrointestinal diseases.
